Question ID: 727757
I am looking for data on the number of public and private sector
companies in India in given size ranges.

I am looking for six different quantities:

+ The number of private sector companies in India who have a number of employees:
 - From 100 to 2,000 employees
 - From 2,000 to 10,000 employees
 - Greater than 10,000 employees

+ The number of public sector companies who have (same thing)
 - From 100 to 2,000 employees
 - From 2,000 to 10,000 employees
 - Greater than 10,000 employees

Finally, I need to know the approx # of employees who work at the
India railways company (I believe this is the largest employer in the
world - I do not have the precise company name).

For these answers to be useful I must have an answer today (Thurs May 11).

If you can't get the exact employee bands above but can get data that
is close, please let me know. I'm looking for the best data you can
find.

Thank you for taking on my question.

I no longer require the data in India Railways. I found data that
show that Indian Railways is in fact the world's largest employer with
over 1.6mm employees.

phoradan-ga,

Tough question! There are a lot of statistics available on the labor
force in India, but they are not in the format you asked for, nor are
they very current.

The most recent stats I can find are for 2001 (2002 data are
available, but I could not successfully open up the file with these
data).

India's total employment of about 28 million workers is broken out by
public and private sector employees. Numbers are also provided for
each state, as well as for India as a whole.

Private sector figures are further broken out by: large companies
(greater than 25 employees), small companies (10-25), and 'local
bodies', though I'm not quite sure what those may be.

Public sector numbers are divided into central government, state
government, and quasi-government.

Does any of that sound as if it might be useful to you? Let me know your thoughts.

If that's the best that can be found, it would at least be something I could use.
I would appreciate if you could verify the figure of 28mm workers -
India's population is over 1 billion, and thus it would seem a figure
of 28mm would be a number that is somehow segmented...

Phoradan,

Would these figures suit your purpose?

Table 12 : Employment in Public and Organised Private Sectors

Taken from the Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy

Thanks,

Thank you for writing.

Unfortunately I don't think so - the reference you point to lists the
number of employees, whereas what I am looking for is the number of
companies.

If you could find a number of companies, that would be super.
