This is admittedly a long shot, given that Google Answers seems to
lack expertise in the mobile commerce field. But here goes.
How do the following mobile social networking/dating services generate
revenue from their members, especially with regards to members who
primarily access their services on their cellphones?
Please write around 1-2 paragraphs describing each service's revenue
model, as can be ascertained from publicly available materials.

- Dodgeball
- Friendster Mobile
- Lavalife Mobile
- Match.com Mobile
- Playtxt

<How MoSoSos make money.

Dodgeball
The company is currently earning revenue through sponsored
advertising. For example it has a deal with Absolut Vodka for the
sponsorship of a nightlife channel. The deal involved Absolut getting
a special spot in the dodgeball network where people could associate
with the brand as a ?friend? in the same way they would with people
they know. Dodgeball aims to get advertisers to provide something of
value to their users like sending location-based messages containing
information on good parties, drinks specials, etc. that relate to the
brand but aren?t solely the brand (spam).

In the future when the market matures they intend to earn revenue from
premium SMS and downloadable applications.

Friendster Mobile.
Friendster Mobile is currently being tested in the Phillipines. Its
revenue model is to charge users for sending messages. Users are
charged Php2.00 to 5.00 per message.

Lavalife Mobile.

Lavalife Mobile operates a subscription based revenue model and a pay
as you go model. The subscription based model charges users $4.99 a
month. The pay-as-you-go model charges 50c for every message that is
sent. There is no cost for messages received.

Match.com mobile.
Match.com mobile has adopted a subscription based revenue model.
Match.com mobile charges a subscription of $5 a month for a stripped
down version of it online service. Members can post multiple photos
with their profiles, receive daily or weekly lists of matches, and
perform complex searches

Playtxt
Playtxt generates revenue by charging premium rates for message
services. Users are charged 50p to send mobile to mobile text messages
via the playtxt network. Playtxt receives around 25p back from the
mobile networks. They give around 25% of that profit to charity. Users
can select which charity they want to support.

Dodgeball
So far our biggest deal has been with Absolut Vodka over the summer.
The deal was akin to a traditional media buy. In this case, Absolut
?sponsored? a nightlife channel. The deal involved Absolut getting a
special spot in the dodgeball network where people could associate
with the brand as a ?friend? in the same way they would with people
they know. Being highly aware of spam, direct-marketing, etc? being
something we and our users wanted to avoid, we understood that
positioning was key for our users. We had to get Absolut (and other
potential partners) to think like content providers as well as brands.
By content providers we mean that they provide something of value to
our users ? sending location-based messages containing information on
good parties, drink specials, etc? that relate to the brand but aren?t
solely the brand (spam). Location and interest relevance is something
that is of utmost importance to us.
Down the road once the market stateside matures, we look to secure
revenue from premium SMS as well as from downloadable applications.
