How much do undocumented Hispanics cost the taxpayers and businesses in the United States each year? This would hopefully include medical, social services, legal and other indirect costs. I will be happy to clarify and a gratuity can be expected. Thanks Bill |

As a commenter, I would not even attempt an answer to this question, but a search with: taxpayer costs illegal aliens gets 2.6 million hits, starting with one about $10.5 billion in California just for education, then another mentions over $1 billion in Arizona "for education, medical care ..." To be fair, "illegal aliens" are not all Hispanics, and the expression illegal may not be synonymous with undocumented. |

Hi Myoarin; The hits you got on your search string match mine very closely. The large number of hits is the reason that I need help on this one. Also the $10.5B number for California that you mention is one that I found as well. BUT! it does not state whether that was after Social Security (usually unclaimed) and taxes were deducted. That number, BTW, matches the number reported in the Washington Post given by the Center for Immigration Studies for the WHOLE US, i.e., $10.4B. So an in depth look is going to be required from a source that is reasonably objective. But your comment "As a commenter, I would not even attempt an answer to this question" interest me greatly. Why would you, or anyone, not attempt to answer this question? The reason I ask is because your reluctance to answer the question might shed some light on why I am having so much difficulty in answering for myself. I certainly appreciate your comment and I truly hope that I have not said anything that you are anyone else might find offensive. I am just looking for an answer. Many thanks again.. Greetings, Absolutely no problem. My opening remark was for two reasons: After my original search, I recognized the complications of the question; I feel that it would be unfair to a Researcher who wanted to "answer" the question for me to delve into the subject too deeply, maybe posting links that made it later appear that he or she had just expanded on my links (though, heaven knows, that sounds very presumptuous, which is not intended). If you agree that "illegal aliens" is an adequate alternative description for your "undocumented Hispanics", posting a clarification could help attract a Researcher. You might also want to clarify to what extent you want the amount of estimated withholding taxes and Soc. Security payments reflected. If this is important, it might be a good idea to make this a separate question, as the FAQs suggest (and mention in the clarification to this question that this information is not wanted, since you have raised the point). Good luck. |

Interesting Myoarin would mention ?You might also want to clarify to what extent you want the amount of estimated withholding taxes and Soc. Security payments reflected.?, I was thinking along the same lines. For instance, if an undocument immigrant is employed at Wal*Mart, Sears, Home Depot or any other United Statesian company, the company does not pay this man/woman ?under the table? he/she gets his paycheck like everybody else, deductions are taken from his pay for Social Security, Fica, Federal and State taxes etc. however, because he/she is undocumented he is unable to claim any benefits afforded to the average United Statesian i/e unemployment, food stamps etc. Also, any amount of taxes paid that would normally be given back by the government upon filing tax returns because of their status the undocumented workers may file but wont get their tax overpayments back. So you see, they pay into the system but are not allowed to participate with the benefits others do, in any attempt to estimate the cost to the US of those that do get some benefits like emergency health and schooling, the amount paid into the system by those that are not allowed to benefit from it should be included. |
