I am looking for some facts regarding the effects of advertising on self-esteem. 
I am also interested in finding out any information on how the human
mind can be hypnotized by advertising, including the brainwashing of
the nightly news.

Regarding hypnotizing using advertising i'm presuming you mean things
like flashing an advert of the product for a fraction of a second.
James Vicery created a stirr with that tactic in 1957 proclaiming he
could get movie goers to drink what he wanted and eat popcorn. It
promptly was banned in the UK Australia and the US.
More recent reasearch shows it can't make you buy things unless you
needed it in the first place. For example if someone flashed an image
of a soft drink you wont go and buy it unless you were thirsty to
begin with, given a choice of many drinks you would most likely buy
the one advertised.
