I am looking for a book (title and author) that mentions the oil
painting "Spirit of 76" by Archibald Willard. The book is a work of
fiction and has a number in the title.

The novel "Trance" mentions Willard's famous painting:

but of course, there's no number in the title.

Is there anything more you can remember about the book?

Could you be thinking of Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut?

The painting, The Spirit of '76 is mentioned on page 143.

Let me know if this is the book.

Best regards,
