Question ID: 728762
How can I get firefox to recognise Real Player on my Intel iMac? I
have installed the latest universl binary from real.com. When I visit
a page which requires realplayer, I get the error message "additional
plugins are required to display media on this page".

I am running OS X 10.4.6

Hello Simonrward,

Hmm. There are several reports of problems with Real player and
Firefox (as well as Camino and some other Mac browsers).

I also assume the error message you are seeing is the one described briefly at
  http://www.trilithium.com/johan/2005/07/additional-plugins/
If this isn't the message - can you please provide the exact message
in a clarification.

There are some web pages indicating that version 10.1 (build 412)
fixes compatibility problems with Firefox. Please confirm this is the
version you are using. According to
  http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
this was not deployed to all of Real's mirror sites as of today. [you
may have build 400 which is also labeled "version 10.1"]

There is also an indication of further problems at
  http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060504083043457
which indicates that some web sites require use of Codecs that are
PowerPC only (requiring use of Rosetta). This would be indicated by
some web sites working OK and others not. If this is your problem,
make a clarification so I can look up a good workaround for those
sites.

If you can find RealPlayer 10.1 this should work. The problem is that
RealPlayer is running through rosetta as a powerpc application. This
means that it will not connect with firefox or safari so long as they
are running as intel. Until you can get a version of RealPlayer
compiled to run on intel you are stuck with using it on it's own. I
understand that RealPlayer have released a new version but I have not
managed to find it yet.

To confirm that this is the problem use the Activity Monitor
application. In the list of processes there should be a 'Kind'
column. This will say PowerPC if running through rosetta. If the
Kind column is not visible just go to view->columns on the menu and
select it.

I just checked again for myself and I found the download is up there,
for the free one too. It has an identical filename,
REALPLAYER10Gold.dmg. It's just that now it is 11mb instead of 8mb.
