Dear barbara53-ga; Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the public holidays for Federal employees. Federal employees typically work on a Monday through Friday schedule so for these employees, when a holiday falls on a non-workday (i.e. Saturday or Sunday) the holiday is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). Otherwise the employees get only the holiday off and return to work on the following day. On the week of July 4, 2007, for example, Federal employees will work Monday (July 2) and Tuesday (July 3) be off for the holiday only on Wednesday and will return to work Thursday (July 5) and Friday (July 6).
