Question ID: 72956
I have an older SCSI 9 G. internal hard drive that I wish to add to my
computer. The primary disk is a 18 G. SCSI hard disk. On boot I
low-level formatted the 9 G. drive but the computer will not continue
the boot with this disk in the chain. Taking it out, the computer
boots fine from the 18 G. disk. The SCSI adapter is U/W Grappler SCSI
- 68 pin. The 9 G. drive worked fine as the primary disk just prior to
the low-level format.

Hello Paternostrum,

What you describe should work OK if...
 - the SCSI Id is unique on each device. Your host is often zero (or
seven), and the two disks will need unique numbers (as well as
anything else on the chain).
 - the system is configured to recognize multiple disks

If changing the id does not work, could you please provide additional
information including:
 - the operating system and computer you are using
 - the program used to format the disk
 - the brand or model of disks used (18G and 9G)
 - the cables / jumpers that are being used
so I can provide some specific suggestions.

It sounds to me like a problem with the ID's of the SCSI drives.
Specifically, the 9gb and the 18gb drive probably had the same drive
ID. The SCSI controller should have id7 and the boot drive id0, with
the secondary drive as id1. Also, make sure termination is set
properly. If the first drive is set to terminate the scsi chain, you
will not be able to see the second drive. Similarly, if none of the
drives is terminating the chain, you will have all sorts of problems.
Typically, drive id selection can be done through jumpers on the
drives or through software.

I'm sorry that you did not find this answer satisfactory. From my
sources, The id of the boot drive should be either 0 or 1 (preferably
0). It is common practice to assign ids in order starting from 0.

I answered in terms of termination and ids because I thought the
question had a reletively straightforward answer. I now find this not
to be the case, but I would be more than happy to help work through
the problems you may still be having with your hard drives. Please let
me know if I can be of further assitance.

I understand SCSI-ID and termination and that is not the problem.
However I have never heard that the boot drive must be ID-0 and the
secondary drive ID-1. I am out of the country right now but will try
this when I get home and let you know. Thanks.

Keep in mind that with SCSI each device must have a unique number as
well as the last device in line has to be terminated.

Back from overseas and finally able to try your suggestion even though
I did not think it would work. I found that you are correct - that it
does make a difference in the SCSI ID sequence. I made the boot drive
SCSI-ID 0 and the the other fixed disk SCSI-1 and it worked.
Previously my experience was that it didn't matter what the ID was
just so long as it didn't conflict with another SCSI device. I see
that you were paid and I'm sorry that I didn't get a chance to add
another consideration since the matter is closed according to Google.
If it makes a difference - I am very grateful to you. This is a great
service.

It makes *all* the difference. Thanks for letting me know.
