Hello rbitt-ga,

Thank you for your question.

The best online resource for doing research on non-profit
organizations in the U.S. is GuideStar.

The GuideStar Website has the nation's largest and most
comprehensive source of data on U.S. nonprofit organizations. It
includes a searchable database of more than 850,000 nonprofit
organizations in the United States where you will find information
about the operations and finances of nonprofit organizations. This
service is free.

GuideStar's Website

GuideStar Searchable Database
http://www.guidestar.org/search/index.jsp

You may search by Nonprofit Name, Keywords, City, State, Zip,
Category, Nonprofit Type, Income Range, EIN, or NTEE Code.

Note: If you refine your search criteria, you can obtain not only the
number of organizations found, but the name of each one. In addition
by clicking on their name, you can see their financial information,
such as income and assets, contact information and activities.

I did a search for non-profits in California and 109,623 organizations
were found but to see details of each organization I had to refine my
search.
Now I searched for non-profits in Santa Monica and California and 724
Organizations were found. By clicking on the name of the organization,
for example, LIBERTY HILL FOUNDATION, the following details are shown.

How to Help:
“This organization is seeking funds from contributions and grants.

You may also refine your search by searching for the name of the
organization or by keyword. For example typing in Aids as the keyword
in the state of California, 800 organizations were found with their
respective details.

I located a list of 775 Non-profits in the State of California with
direct links to their Websites.
California Non-Profit Organizations

Baker Library collects annual reports and IRS 990 Forms for
organizations on the NonProfit Times 100 list, the Foundation
Directory Top 100 Foundations Ranked by Assets list and/or the HBS
Field Studies in Social Enterprise list. These reports provide
invaluable information on the mission, goals, finances, structure and
executive compensation of the organizations. This list is organized in
alphabetical order and is not searchable by state.

This may interest you as well:

Highroute-ga mentioned in another question that there is a search
form at the Internal Revenue Services website where you can search for
charitable organizations that are exempt from Federal income tax (not
all nonprofits are):
