In the island Mykonos in Greece there are a few known Pelicans.
The most famous is called Petros and a year ago there was also an old
female Pelican called Erene (not sure of the spelling...)and also one
named George.
My question - as of today, how many pelicans are on the island and
what are their names (there are about 3-5 of them).
An extra $2 tip for a link to an updated (the last 8 months) photo of Erene. |

Here is what I have been able to find:
Tue Sep 06, 2005
"...Mykonians name the pelican Petros and make him their mascot.
Petros becomes world famous and his 1986 death is mourned around the
globe. Jackie O, who spent time on the island, donates another pelican
named Irene-Irini, and a German zoo sends a pelican named Petros II to
the islanders in mourning.
Furthermore, a few years back a new wounded pelican shows up on the
island, is nursed back to health, and decides to stay, ala Petros I,
this bird is named Nikolas.
The Legend Is Sullied:
So today three pelicans waddle around Mykonos delighting tourists and
Mykonians alike.

"About 40 years ago a local fisherman found an injured pelican, nursed
him back to health and then set him free. Instead of flying off, the
bird decided to stay. Mykonians named him Petros (Peter) and made him
the mascot of Mykonos. Petros became so famous that all of Greece was
saddened when he died in 1986. Jackie Kennedy donated another pelican,
named Irene-Irini, and the Hamburg Zoo sent a pelican named Petros. A
few year ago, another wounded young pelican fell to the island and was
cared for by the local people. This one was named Nikolas. Now, with
three friendly pelicans walking about the waterfront, a visitor can
usually spot at least one of them. I ask who this fellow is and the
waiter says he is Petros."

Let me know if the above suffices as an answer to your question.

Thanks Rainbow - I'm aware of these sites but they do not give an
answer if these pelicans exist our days. I mainly want to know if
Irene/Irini is still alive (my wife named Iren fell in love with
her...). An answer to this question will do. And an updated photo?

Well - thanks any way Rainbow - I guess that the best is for me to
call some one on the island and find out the answer first hand.
Thanks again,

Sorry Rainboy - it can be understood from this quote you gave "So
today three pelicans waddle around Mykonos..." that Irene/Irini is
still alive as of Sep 2005 since I understand that this quote is from
that date.
So please answer so to be rewarded.
THANKS.
