Question ID: 730092
How can I whiten my teeth uniformly if I have caps/crowns/and other dental work?

I would like to whiten my teeth after years of coffee use. However, I
had dental work done years ago on some of my front teeth after an
accident. I have some veneer work, crown work (porcelain I believe),
and two false teeth.
It seems as if these yellowed with coffee stains then they might also
whiten as well.

Are there products on the market that will allow me to accomplish
whitening all of my teetch (natural and cosmetic) without having to
have major dental work done?

thx

Hello Emaley,

It seems that the most you can expect in a whitening of your
porcelain crown and false teeth will be a restoration of their
original color. Because the composition of crowns and dentures are not
organic, as is tooth enamel, they will not change in color, beyond
stain removal. It does appear however, that you can expect to have
some whitening done without extensive dental work! For complete
information, please read the entire page of each link below.

Question:
I have my two front veneered in Porcelain. I would like to whiten my
teeth again, but am scared that all my teeth will whiten EXCEPT for my
veneers. Will the solution (I have trays and solution from dentist)
permeate through the veneers to whiten too, or will I end up with
whiter teeth everywhere except my front teeth? ...Melissa

Answer:
Melissa, you are right to be concerned. One of the nice things about
porcelain restorations, including veneers, is they won't change color.
If you bleach, the porcelain will not change. At all.

There are 2 choices (3 if you include doing nothing). First is wear
the trays or BriteSmile, and then replace the 2 veneers to match.
Second is veneer the entire smile zone. The advantage with the latter
is the exact advantage you started with: they won't change over time.
You will always have a perfect smile. If you bleach, as time goes on
your teeth will rebound and you will have to start all over.

Sorry to confirm your fears...

Question:
I have a bridge from eye tooth to eye tooth upper part and they seem
to be turning yellow. What can I use to brighten them?

Answer:
?? many products are available today that can whiten your teeth. If
your bridge is made of porcelain, a thorough cleaning will most likely
help. Locate a dentist in your area who emphasizes cosmetic care and
have your situation evaluated?

Question:
I have good teeth, and have no cavities, but my teeth are somewhat
discolored. I would like to get them whitened, but I am concerned
about the long term effects of the process. I know Hydrogen Peroxide
and other bleaches are notoriously hard on hair and other body parts.

Will the chemicals damage my enamel or the structure beneath? ??

Answer:
Yours is a common question and a good one. It is important to note
that the structure of enamel is very different than your hair. Studies
have shown that the bleaching process is only harmful if done over
long periods of time without a break and the exposure levels in the
studies are almost impossible to reproduce at home.

They only resulted in changes in the outermost microns of the teeth,
most of which would get removed during a routine cleaning with the
"gritty toothpaste" that we use. Any demineralization from wearing
trays gets counteracted immediately from your saliva, so bleaching is
very safe.

Question:
I have several crowns. I want to use the Crest Whitening strips but I
am concerned that the peroxide might disolve or damage the cement that
is holding the crown?

Answer:
That should not happen if your crowns fit properly and the cementation
procedure was done adequately. Actually, bleaching gel helps to kill
bacteria and keeps crown margins healthy.?

?You should never use regular tooth whitening products on your
dentures. They could damage your dentures and render them useless.
There are special denture cleaners and whiteners available over the
counter. If all else fails, you can take your dentures to the dentist
for a polishing. This usually brings the denture back to its original
shine and luster, but you should not expect it to be any whiter than
that.

If you now find that the original shade of your teeth is no longer
satisfactory, you can have more expensive teeth installed that have
several shades to choose from. Beware that these premium dentures may
have a wide variety of white shades, but you?ll also foot a bigger
bill to replace all of your teeth. Just like picking paints, your
dentist can provide you with a shade chart to help you find the right
color.
For the most part you?ll only have to replace the front teeth since
those are the only visible ones. Replacing just he front teeth can
take some time, but if your dentist has a lab in his office it could
be done while you wait.?

This abstract tells us that denture cleaner does whiten false teeth
over time, but do not tell us which brand. It appears that there are
only 2-3 major brands, so you mght start trying one of them at a time,
for several weeks at a time.(Further down, however, a site strongly
recommends Polident)

This site says that tooth whiteners will not clean acrylic dentures
or porcelain crowns. Please read the entire page, as it answers many
questions about tooth whitening. This page also links to a page that
carries (and sells!!!) products.

?Home kits are cheaper. But because tooth whitening is a
complicated procedure you should only have it done by a dentist, after
a thorough examination and assessment of your teeth.

Over-the-counter kits sold in the UK are not recommended as they
usually contain only a small concentration of hydrogen peroxide (the
whitening product). The legal limit in the UK is 0.1% of hydrogen
peroxide and effective bleaching products need to have about 3.6%. So
home kits will not be able to lighten your teeth noticeably. Also,
some contain mild acids and others are abrasive. This can cause ulcers
and damage to the gums if the product is not used properly?

When might tooth whitening not work?

Tooth whitening can only lighten your existing tooth colour. Also it
only works on natural teeth. It will not work on any types of ?false?
teeth such as dentures, crowns and veneers.

If your dentures are stained or discoloured visit your dentist and ask
for them to be cleaned. Stained veneers, crowns or dentures may need
replacing; again ask your dentist.

I know you don?t want to hear ?Please see your dentist?, but that is
precisely who can guide you to the best procedure for your particular
case. Selecting the best method or methods would depend on the age of
your crowns and false teeth, along with their composition. Good Luck!

Try out Eucryl smokers tooth powder on the caps and veneers.
