How can I solve the following problem?
I have four computer files on a laptop computer and I would like to do
the following:
1. Transfer the files from my laptop to my desktop computer
2. Back-up the files to CD from my desktop using the desktop's
internal CD-RW drive
The files are ".pst" files of the following sizes:
file 1 = 527MB (megabytes)
file 2 = 685MB (megabytes)
file 3 = 588MB (megabytes)
file 4 = 1.0GB (gigabytes)
My laptop is an IBM Thinkpad 600X and is running on Window2000
Professional. My desktop is a Dell Dimension 4100 running on Windows
Me Millinium Edition.
Other information that may be useful:
1. Both the laptop and the desktop are connected to the web over a
dsl line. Can I transfer the files through the web? Or, do I need
connect the machines directly? How?
2. Whenever I try to copy a file on my desktop to the internal CD-RW
drive (it's the "E:" drive on my pc), I get an "Error Copying File or
Folder" error dialogue box. The dialogue box says "make sure the disk
is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in
use". The disk in the CD-RW drive is new (blank right out of the box)
and the file is definitely not currently in use. I know my CD-RW
drive is working because I am able to burn MP3 files to CDs using
RealOne software. Do I need special software to burn these data
files, too?
3. I've heard that CD-RW disks will only hold 650 MB of data. If
this limit is true, I would be able to break my 1.0 GB file into two
smaller files to meet this limit.
Any advice on keeping my costs down would also be appreciated. Thank
you! |

CORRECTION: My CD drive is a CD-R drive, not a CD-RW drive.

Hi bag1971,
For clarification... are you saying that
you cannot successfully burn to a CD? If
so, that is the main thing we need to work
on.
The file copying, very easy. All it requires
is a cable and some Operating System tweaks.
Yes you will have to break the 1.0GB file into
two chunks.
thanks,

AI is correct - copying files between two computers with network cards
is trivial (you should connect them either with a crossover cable or
through a router, switch, or hub and setup Windows Networking), you
just need to know how. The CD burner is your main problem.
Do you have CD burning software such as Adaptec / Roxio Easy CD
Creator or Nero Burning Rom? If you purchased your CD burner retail,
you should have such software included as part of the package, most
likely Nero. If you bought an OEM / whitebox drive, you may need to
get software.

AI, haversian - thanks for the info and clarifying questions... here's
the info I think you're requesting...
Q: are you saying that you cannot successfully burn to a CD?
A: I am able to burn MP3's onto CDs using RealOne software, but I
don't know how to burn other file types to CD (like the .pst files in
question). It sounds like there may have been software pre-installed
on my Dell Dimension when I bought it with the internal CD-R drive
also pre-installed. I'll check my PC's documentation to see if Roxio
(I think RealOne is usine a Roxio plug-in to burn MP3's onto CDs, but
it doesn't work for other file types) or Nero are there. I suspect I
may need to install this software.
re: copying files between two computers with network cards

Both pc's have network cards. If I attach the pc's with a cat5 cable
(I have a cat5 cable with RJ45(?) adapters), can you tell me what I
need to do transfer the files? Or, do I need to use one of the other
ports and a different type of cable? One machine is running Windows
2000 and the other machine is running Windows Me.
Again, thank you!!!!
