Gardasil is essentially preventive, not curative. Studies indicate
that it will not eliminate HPV from those who currently harbor the
virus. In fact, the use of Gardasil might put such patients at risk.

"[Dr. Nancy] Miller said Gardasil does not necessarily protect against
one or more of the four viruses in people already infected before they
get the vaccine, and can increase their risk for precursors to
cervical cancer."

CBS News:Panel OKs Cervical Cancer Vaccine
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/05/18/health/main1628221.shtml

"There is concern for the safety of patients who are already infected
and are given the vaccine, as it can lead to a raised number of cases
of a cancer precursor."

Medical News Today: Cervical Cancer Vaccine Safe And Effective Say FDA Staff
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/healthnews.php?newsid=43570

"There is compelling evidence that the vaccine lacks therapeutic
efficacy among women who have had prior exposure to HPV and have not
cleared previous infection, according to FDA?s briefing documents for
the meeting.

According to FDA, some analyses suggest Gardasil may enhance cervical
disease among a subgroup of patients with persistent infection of
vaccine-relevant HPV types at baseline.

Adverse effects for patients already infected with HPV could encourage
vaccination at a younger age, before women are likely to be infected."
