This is a question which may require some simple legal research. I
would like to know what are the approved publications for publishing
legal notices in New York City ? Where in the statutes is that
information cited ?

The details of where a legal notice may be published are not set in
stone (nor, it appears, in print), but are decided either by a judge
or by the office of the County Clerk. In New York City:

NORMAN GOODMAN
COUNTY OF NEW YORK
COURTHOUSE
60 CENTRE STREET, ROOM 161
NEW YORK, NY 10007
(212) 374-8589 or 374-8587

"Section 206 of the Limited Liability Company Law of the State of New York states:

Within one hundred twenty days after the effectiveness of the initial
Articles of Organization, a copy of same or a notice containing the
substance thereof shall be published once each week for six successive
weeks, in two newspapers of the county in which the office of the
Limited Liability Company is located, to be designated by the County
Clerk, one of which newspapers shall be a newspaper published in the
city or town in which the office is intended to be located, if a
newspaper is published therein; or, if no newspaper is published
therein, in the newspaper nearest thereto, and proof of such
publication by the Affidavit of the printer or publisher of each such
newspaper must be filed with the Department of State."

"According to past NYSSCPA [New York State Society of Certified Public
Accountants] president Alan E. Weiner... 'New York City is probably
the most expensive place in the state to publish because the county
clerk always assigns the New York Law Journal as one of the two
papers'."

An excerpt from a post by librarian Donna Cavellini:

"It appears, as I suspected might be the case, that there is no
definitive source which lists where one *must* publish. Below, I have
quoted from the
responses I received:

For posting legal notices, generally the COUNTY of the town for your
address will tell you the newspapers of record for that county. the
town clerk may also have the same address. I think it depends on the
level of publication you wish..that is, the level of the audience. I
think I have simply called towns before. Sometimes the town newspaper
of record is a paper of very limited circulation (in the eyes of a
librarian) but perfectly legal. We sometimes make our determination
based on costs of the ad after finding out which publications we can
use. Nathan's Legal Markets (a print directory) lists Court &
Commercial Newspapers...

I have seen legal notices in all of the New York papers (the New York
Law Journal, of course, but also the New York Times, the Daily News,
the New York Post and New York Newsday (which is mainly Long Island).
Someone here told me that usually the judge requiring the legal notice
will tell you what publication to run the notice in."

The online version of the New York Law Journal should be a useful
resource. Here you can look at samples of public notices in many
categories. Although the Journal does not give legal advice, it does
offer assistance in preparing public notices:

"The Law Journal is a legal newspaper. This means we possess more
extensive knowledge of the requirements and procedures for successful
publication of a variety of public notices. Although the Law Journal
can not provide legal advice, we can tell you how to place public
notices. We'll handle typesetting and scheduling and also provide
notarized proof of publication."

My Google search strategy:

Google Web Search: "new york city" OR nyc "legal notice OR notices"
"must be published"

Google Web Search: "new york city" OR nyc "legal notice OR notices" "county clerk"

I hope this is helpful. If anything is unclear or incomplete, please
request clarification; I'll gladly offer further assistance before you
rate my answer.
