Greetings, Journalist!
Here are some of my favorite hangouts for free graphics and clipart:
Clip Art Connection has many good links for art, fonts, animations,
and forums related to these things. Unlike many such sites, it is not
spring-loaded with popup ads (unfortunately, I can't say this of some
of the other links I am going to list; clipart sites seem to be
riddled with popups, some of which are downright annoying.)

Some more nicely laid out collections of links (not all links are
functional, as is almost always the case with collections):

In addition to some beautiful stuff that is for sale, there are many
clever .gif animations here for free, and a "public gallery" of
clipart that will knock your metaphorical socks off, if you are
wearing metaphorical socks:

As a person who grew up in the era of "I Love Lucy" and "Leave It to
Beaver," I am a sucker for retro clipart. There's a ton of it at
Squaresville. The site says "this is more of a pad for you neo beatnik
swingin young Kerouacs than old fogies looking for clipart for their
diner menus." As a diner-menu-seeking old fogy, I take offense at
this, but not so much offense that I am unwilling to use the clipart.

Here's a site that offers some beautiful Victorian-style clipart. This
is charming for making one's own greeting cards:

To find photographic images in a myriad of categories, I recommend
Corbis. As the site says, it's "a cut above clip art to make you and
your projects stand out." Be sure to check out the "Editors' Picks"
section, which changes frequently.

Last, but certainly not least, don't forget Google's own image search
engine. This is a truly amazing resource for finding every variety of
image imaginable (and a few that are unimaginable until you see 'em.)

I could go on and on, but drowning in information is as bad as being
dry, and the links above should quench your thirst for graphics for
quite some time! Thanks for requesting me by name. Please let me know
if I can be of further assistance.
Yours,
