Dear sanimalo-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.

A woman of average size can walk comfortably at brisk speeds of 3.5 to
4 miles an hour, while the average-sized man can walk at 4.5 to 5
miles per hour.

NEW FITNESS

According to DayOut Maps and Guides it is 609 miles (975 km) from
Kaitaia to Wellington via the most feasible paved route, State Highway
1 (SH1). Therefore it would logically take an average woman roughly
152-174 hours (or 6.3 - 7.2 days) to walk this distance and
approximately 129-135 hours (or 5.3 ? 5.6 days) for the average man.
This assumes of course that the average walking speeds were constantly
maintained the journey was non-stop and unimpeded.

DAYOUT
http://www.dayout.co.nz/maps_guides.asp

Realistically however, a person cannot maintain this average walking
speed for this period of time without rest. In addition you must
calculate your own average walking speed and down time to get a
relatively accurate projection. To calculate your personal average
walking speed, simply follow this set of instructions:

EHOW.COM
http://www.ehow.com/how_8939_estimate-walking-speed.html

Take the result (in mph) and divide it by 609 miles. This figure
represents the number of hours it should take you to complete the
non-stop journey. Take that result and add to it the number of hours
expected to be stationary (resting, sleeping, camping, sightseeing,
etc). This figure will tell you how many hours it will take you to
complete the journey including down time depending of course on how
much personal equipment one is capable of bearing.

Reasonably then, taking into account normal travel and resting times,
the journey should take a little more than a week to 10 days for the
average man and about 10 days to two weeks for the average woman. A
lesisurely walk can easily be expected to take two to three weeks
barring injury, weather, or other impediments.

I hope you find that my answer exceeds your expectations. If you have
any questions about my research please post a clarification request
prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your
final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the
near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
