I?ve got a Mac Mini with a Lacie external drive.
I used to get the dreaded Beach Ball Of Death frequently, so I
upgraded the internal memory from 512MB to 1GB.
However, I?m still getting that damn beach ball.
I?ve got the Activity Monitor running, and it shows that the CPU usage
is fine. Nothing is using over 15%.
I think the reason I keep getting the BBOD is I keep running out of memory.
However, it also shows that I have a lot of inactive memory. For
example, as I?m typing this I?ve got less than 70 MB of free memory,
but over 500MB of inactive memory.
Is there a way to free up this inactive memory, or any other way to
stop getting the BBOD? |

How much free hard drive space do you have left? What are you
typically doing when you get the BBoD?

welte-ga,
On the Mini I?ve got over 17GB, on the Lacie external I?ve got over 1GB.
I get the BBoD whenever I use any program; it could be the Firefox
browser, iTunes, as soon as I have two or more programs open it slows
way down.
I?m certainly not doing anything graphics intensive.

Did the BBOD start when you got the Lacie drive? If so, then perhaps
system drivers have to be updated? Maybe there's a bug in the product
that needs to be sorted out by software patches. In which case, you
have to wait until a software fix appears.
Or are there other devices plugged in to your Mini aside from the
Lacie? I've read around forums that too many connected devices could
cause the BBOD.

techtor-ga,
Yeah, I had read that SBBoD FAQ a while back, but no joy.
