I am contemplating getting my doctorate degree online, and have looked
at several schools that have the program that I am looking to finish.
The schools are the University of Phoenix and Capella University. I am
trying to determine which school I should attend. I have read several
postings about each school, and have found both negative and positive
feedback. Which school has the better reputation and provides the best
service to students?

Avoid schools that are only or mostly online. Their reputations are
not great. Find a traditional brick and mortar school that happens to
have an online program.

I tend to agree with Nelson. Your original questin asked about Capella
and Phoenix and their reputation. However, the day that an online
school will have the same reputation as a B&M one are far off. I would
even see if I can arrange my time to have a partial residency.

By the way, you haven't said if what you have is a master's degree or
if you want to go for the whole way (BA --> Doctorate). If you've got
a masters, consider checking out schools in the UK (or similar
programmes: most of Europe, Australia, etc.). Since doctorate in the
UK is pure research (no class attendance), I think that many
supervisors and committees would agree to see you a couple of times a
year, and to get email communication for the rest of the time.

You also didn't say *why* you want to pursue a doctoral study. Because
you want to teach in academia? Because you want to be involved in
research? In these two cases, B&M and the associated activities
(appearing in conferences, writing articles) are more important, and
UK solution (or leaving your work and doing it full time in the US)is
necessary.

I suspect that any employer who requires a PhD will not give much
weight to an applicant whose degree is from an on-line or mail-odrer
institution. However, if youu simply want to call yourself Dr.

Not all brick and mortar schools are that great either.

You may wish to check out the following websites

When you key in the name of the dreadful institution to which these web sites
refer you will see these sites coming up near the top.

AND this outfit (which has 60 really ugly buildings which take away
from the otherwise great natural beauty of Canada) is apparently
licensed by the edication deaprtments of at least 5 Canadian
provinces.
