What do you mean by "food elements"? Here's an article that offers
some definitions but this seems far too advanced for 5th grade.

My daughter's class is studying elements such as aluminum, and she
is supposed to bring in pizza today for lunch. They are turning in
there reports on aluminum, and other elements, and the teacher has
asked that she also give the elements for the pizza she is bringing
in. I went nuts last night trying to find the answer, which is why I
am asking Google for the answer.

I am not sure what the teacher is expecting on this. I am going to go with the
information that is provided and hope for the best. I think that
sometimes the teacher's go a little nuts when asking an elementary
student to provide such information. They know that the student can
not answer such questions, and what good is it for the student if the
parent is doing the assignments because it is way over the students
head. Sorry for my rantings...just tired.
Thanks for the help!!!

Hello lisjen-ga,

I?m sorry you and your daughter are so stressed about her homework. If
you do a simple search for < food elements > you come up with the
first link I gave you. Scrolling down the page you quickly get
additional links that quickly define what are ?food elements? even if
you can?t figure this out from her school work.

http://www.soilandhealth.org/02/0201hyglibcat/020126shelton.orthotrophy/020126.ch2.htm
Foods are materials which supply the "elements" necessary for
promoting growth of the body and repairing its waste, yield energy for
muscular work, yield heat, regulate the body processes, and make
reproduction possible.

According to their chemical composition, foods are classified as:
 -- Proteins.
 -- Carbohydrates (starches and sugars).
 -- Hydrocarbons (fats and oils).
 -- Salts (organic).
 -- Vitamins.

According to their functions, foods are divided into:
-- Fuel and energy foods--carbohydrates, fats, proteins.
 -- Building foods--proteins, salts, water.
-- Regulators of body processes--minerals, vitamins, water.

According to their sources, foods are classified as:
 -- Vegetable foods.
 -- Animal foods.

If the point of the class is to understand the basics of nutrition by
analyzing what goes into what we eat, she can make a list of
ingredients that are in her pizza and classify them according to the
above scheme. This seems well within the learning goals for the 5th
grade level.

I suggest that you review your daughter?s assignment and whatever
resource materials the teacher provided. If your daughter doesn?t have
enough information about how to interpret the assignment she should
ask her teacher for clarification. If the teacher has nothing else to
offer, I suggest that you proceed along the lines I?ve suggested.

Will this help you to help your daughter?

Try not to stress too much over homework. In future ask your 5th
grader what they think the teacher means, encourage him/her to ask
questions about what is expected BEFORE they come home. But above all
remember it's your child's work the teacher wants not yours. I know
it's hard and your don't want your child to get it wrong. I also have
a child in Year 5.
