By 'disposals' do you mean 'waste disposal units' ?
- otherwise known as teaspoon choppers

I've never heard of such a feature.

Personally I would go for Bosch or Miele - I can only afford Bosch.

Years ago, I bought all Miele domestic appliances. Very expensive to
buy and to service. I saw no discernible benefits.

After the Miele stuff packed up, I have favoured no particular make
and I have been very happy with Bosch, Hotpoint, LG and Zanussi.

My present dishwasher is a Hotpoint, bought on the recommendation of a
dishwasher serviceman who handles everything. Very pleased.

Many of today's domestic appliances are made by the same folk and then
badged according to the brand image of the (supposed) manufacturer.

I've never heard of 'disposals'.

I live in Germany and have never heard of disposal units incorporated
in dishwashers (Germans lick their plates clean ;). For decades we
have had Miele dishwashers, excellent, with a removable filter at the
bottom of the washing compartment that can be easily removed for
cleaning.

Sink disposal units are also virtually unknown here.

@Probono

Interesting, that is opposite to my experience, my early kit was
generally inexpensive but the build quality was poor.

I was impressed by my Bosch dishwasher which survived to the ripe age
of twenty, when it expired replacement was a no brainer.

As things died, they got replaced with Bosch, I have one complaint a
FET (high voltage electronic switch) burnt out on my replacement
dishwasher shortly after it came out of warranty - if it happens again
I'll make a major fuss.

Although, as you said, there is a lot of 'badge slapping' going on, I
would prefer a machine built by the real manufacturer.

As for Hotpoint, I had one of their washer dryers for about 15 years,
out of amusement I paid annual maintenance, it had numerous heart
transplants and looked and felt decrepit.

When they sent me a renewal offering a new machine if something went
wrong - but a substantial charge to bin the machine, I ceased my
research.

Back in 1978 I reckoned that there was a real market for 'white goods'
rental and have been watching developments with interest - the money
is in continuous income with planned maintenance and refurbishment.

We have seen blue collar costs cut by automation, white collar costs
cut by computers - the next step is to strip out sales costs
- you can supply a machine for less than the cost of a warranty

In the US is common for dishwashers to have, as part of the drain
system, a small grinder which is supposed to reduce chunks of food
waste to a proper size to fit through the plumbing. One of the knocks
against the European dishwashers in the US market is that they lack
this feature. So it is not surprising that our friends across the
pond don't recongnize (recognise) this feature.

Thanks philnj-ga for the explanation.

Here in Europe, many people have waste disposal units built-in to
their sinks so food scraps can be disposed of accordingly.

That's what I do.
