I am planning to attend Eastwind school of massage, Iowa City this fall, in hopes of gaining licensure. I would like to work in Maui for awhile before I likely return to the continental US. I understand that there is some difference in the licenscing requirements/process in different states, and maybe even some difference in the classroom requirements. I understand that there is some nationalizing of standards and certification that many states including Iowa belong to, although I have heard Hawaii is not one of them. So I would like to know what woulod be necessary to become licensed in Hawaii and if the current comprehensive Eastwind cirriculum is sufficient. Also I would like to know the job climate for massage therapists in Maui, where can I find a job, how do they pay, and any additional beneficial information. I am also certified as a yoga instructor, personal trainer, pilates instructor, and PADI divemaster. My passion is yoga and I have been self-employed in the fitness industry for years. I'm thinking massage may more stable of an employment prospect over some of my other qualifications. I'm considering maybe even part-time work to support working for myself training or teaching yoga on the island. Are there resort/fitness center jobs available, too? |

Aloha, Check out: The Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs http://www.hawaii.gov/dcca/areas/pvl/boards/massage/ This site provides contact information for the state's regulatory agency for massage. (Tips: Please keep in mind that Hawaii state offices are typically only open for public services from 8am to 2,3, or 4pm - very rarely a "full" day for any state agency; and, generally speaking, it pays to be very polite but very persistent in dealing with government agencies in Hawaii.) On the right hand side of the page are links to the Hawaii Revised Stautes (HRS) and Hawaii Administrative Rules relating to massage licensing and practice. There is also a Geographical Report that states how many licensees are on Maui. You may also consider contacting Kapiolani Community College's massage therapy department here on Oahu. They may have some good insights into the job market for massage therapists in Hawaii/on Maui (Maui Community College does not offer massage courses). http://programs.kcc.hawaii.edu/health/massage/index.htm If you feel that it would be appropriate, you could ask questions about licensing and the job market on Maui from these private massage schools on Maui: http://www.massageschoolmaui.com/ http://www.spaluna.com/ E komo mai! |
