Question ID: 732671
I am going to the breakfast. Need to know as much as possible about
this event for my first VC adventure. Things I am looking for but not
limit to are:

- What kind of setting and format?
- How much chance you will get to talk to VCs about your startup

A couple of general tips I am also looking for:

- tips on how to sell your idea to VC

- tips on USVP as VC in general and characteristic

Hello wkevin-ga,

Please tell us more about the event you're asking about. I'm not
familiar with what a "chip and eggs breakfast" might be, especially
when you say, "I am going to the breakfast." This seems to assume that
we all know what this might be. The more you tell us about the context
of your question, the more likely that we can get you the information
you need. I look forward to your clarification.

Hello again wkevin-ga,

Does your question refer to the SVACE VC Breakfast Club events that
myoarin-ga found? I don?t see US Venture Partners on the schedule in
the posted schedule of upcoming events. I?ve also found other sponsors
for VC Breakfast events in other locations. Please let us know when
and where the VC Breakfast you will be attending will take place.
Thanks.

Clarification of Question by wkevin-ga on 02 Jun 2006 11:53 PDT
Sorry for the late reply. Google didn't notify me new comments so I
have not come back here to check since I post the question. Is there a
way configure so Google will notify me anytime a comment or a request
is posted?

So far I have very little information about the event. I was told that
the breakfast is held regularly on the second Wednesday of each month.
The next one is on June 13th, which is the one I am invited to. They
have yet to send to the detail and the place about the breakfast.

I don't think it is the same breakfast hosted by SVACE. USVP 's
website is at www.usvp.com. One of the partner there is my alumni
which gets me in the door.

Hello wkevin-ga,

I'm glad to see you back. Unfortunately the notification service is
down temporarily. I don't know when it will be back up. I suggest that
you check back regularly to see if there are clarification requests on
your question.

I'm still confused about where this breakfast will be held. Where are
you located? What country / state / city? Is this where the breakfasts
take place? Who invited you? Is the event publicly advertised? Is it
sponsored by a membership organization? How did you hear of it?

Remember, Google Answers has customers all over the world. Your
expression of "chip and eggs" breakfast doesn't feel like an American
expression and that's why I'm wondering where you are. USVP is in
Menlo Park, California. Their page of "Where to Meet USVP" does not
show an entrepreneur breakfast on the schedule.

http://www.usvp.com/printable/about/event.html

I'm also confused because you say the event is "on the second
Wednesday of each month. The next one is on June 13th, ..." but June
13th is a Tuesday. There's a SVASE VC Breakfast on Thursday, June
15th, but the VC listed is Opus Capital.

I'm afraid I don't have enough information to be able to take this any
further. Please clarify so I know how to proceed. Thanks.

Hello czh,

Thank you very much for the follow up questions. My mistake on the
date. here is original message :
"
The next breakfast is June 14th (2nd Wed. of each month) in Palo Alto.
I will add you to our distribution list so get the reminder.
"
I am based in Bay area, so you are right on the Menlo Park where USVP is located.

The expression of "Chip and eggs" is indeed correct. Here is the
message I get from the partner in USVP:

"... Why don?t we catch up at the next chip and eggs breakfast ..."

I got the invitation when I approach my alumni with my business idea.
I am puzzled too by the lack of search result I get from google.

Could it be one of these? Neither lists USVP as the speaker or presenter.

Hello wkevin-ga,

As I indicated in my last clarification request, because I don?t have
specific information about what VC breakfast event you will be
attending on June 14th I will not be able to answer your questions
about ?setting and format.? To compensate for this, I?ve researched
the local Bay Area organizations that sponsor VC breakfast meetings to
give you some general guidelines on what to expect when you attend
such a meeting. In addition, I?ve also collected some information for
you on how to make your pitch to a VC whenever you get the chance. The
short version is the ?elevator pitch? and the longer version is the 5
? 15 minute presentation pitch at various VC events. I have not
covered how to make your formal presentation pitch when you have
successfully connected with a VC and they?re ready to hear you at
their offices in front of their team.

All of the links emphasize the importance of being prepared so that
you?re ready to make your presentation (however long or short) when
the opportunity comes. Most of the VC breakfast events seem to require
you to sign up if you want to be one of the small group of
entrepreneurs who will make a presentation to the VCs. If you are
signed up for such a meeting you should have instructions ahead of
time on the timing and format you are to follow. Many of these meeting
also give 2-3 entrepreneurs in the audience to make a 2-minute pitch.
These seem to be selected at random so you should be prepared if you
want to participate in the random draw to be chosen.

Since it?s hard to time your pitch without a lot of preparation, I
suggest that you have several versions of your pitch and practice them
ahead of time so they will flow naturally when you get a chance to
make a VC pitch. The links below give you some specific suggestions on
the suggested outline for the content and flow of your pitch. These
should help you prepare for your meeting next week. I also suggest
that you review USVP?s website and research their current projects so
you can tailor your pitch appropriately.

My research shows that there are several organizations in the Bay Area
that regularly schedule VC events. I suggest that you review these and
sign up for their newsletters and regularly review their event
calendars for meetings that might interest you.

I trust that the information I?ve found will help you prepare for your meeting.

Wishing you well with your entrepreneurial efforts.

Great Elevator Pitches: Intro

Over the last 18 months I?ve attended numerous VC breakfast clubs,
founders' brown bag lunches, cocktail receptions and keynote speaker
dinners that I think I must have gained 30 pounds. Over the course of
these events I have met hundreds of other entrepreneurs looking to
grow and fund their businesses. However, of this group, I can only
tell you what a handful of these entrepreneurs actually do.
Unfortunately most entrepreneurs just don?t know how to explain what
their business does in any type of succinct or effective manner.

Thus, this series of blog entries is an attempt to explain how I?ve
learned to build a great elevator pitch.

For Entrepreneurs, a good pitch is needed no matter the task at hand.
Want to raise capital? ? You need to pitch your plan. Want to attract
top notch employees? ? You need to pitch your vision. Want to attract
strategic partners? ? You need to pitch the benefits of working with
you. Want to increase sales? ? You need to pitch your solution. The
ability to pitch, i.e., to get your key message across in a
meaningful, compelling, and concise manner, is one of the
Entrepreneur's most necessary skill sets. It is remarkable then, that
it is also one of the skills most often missing.

Hello wkevin-ga,

I see that you've posted a clarification request in the Comments
section. You will get a quicker response if you post your follow-up
requests as a formal clarification request.

---------------
Thanks for the research. The info are generally useful.
May I ask for one more thing? Can you find a leading list of
forum/discussion boards on entrepreneurship. I have a specific
question need to post.
---------------

As you requested, I?m posting some links to discussion boards and
forums. I?m also including links for some local organizations that
provide discussion forums as a membership benefit. I?ve also included
some general resources on entrepreneurship.

It?s unfortunate that you couldn?t provide the name of the
organization and/or the place of the meeting you?re planning to attend
so that I could give you more detailed information. It's too bad that
none of the meetings on June 14th seem to be the one you're planning
to attend. In the future, the more information you can provide about
the context and background of your question, the greater the
likelihood that the researcher can get you the information you need.

Best wishes for great success in your entrepreneurial endeavors.
