Hello wkevin-ga,
As I indicated in my last clarification request, because I don?t have
specific information about what VC breakfast event you will be
attending on June 14th I will not be able to answer your questions
about ?setting and format.? To compensate for this, I?ve researched
the local Bay Area organizations that sponsor VC breakfast meetings to
give you some general guidelines on what to expect when you attend
such a meeting. In addition, I?ve also collected some information for
you on how to make your pitch to a VC whenever you get the chance. The
short version is the ?elevator pitch? and the longer version is the 5
? 15 minute presentation pitch at various VC events. I have not
covered how to make your formal presentation pitch when you have
successfully connected with a VC and they?re ready to hear you at
their offices in front of their team.
All of the links emphasize the importance of being prepared so that
you?re ready to make your presentation (however long or short) when
the opportunity comes. Most of the VC breakfast events seem to require
you to sign up if you want to be one of the small group of
entrepreneurs who will make a presentation to the VCs. If you are
signed up for such a meeting you should have instructions ahead of
time on the timing and format you are to follow. Many of these meeting
also give 2-3 entrepreneurs in the audience to make a 2-minute pitch.
These seem to be selected at random so you should be prepared if you
want to participate in the random draw to be chosen.
Since it?s hard to time your pitch without a lot of preparation, I
suggest that you have several versions of your pitch and practice them
ahead of time so they will flow naturally when you get a chance to
make a VC pitch. The links below give you some specific suggestions on
the suggested outline for the content and flow of your pitch. These
should help you prepare for your meeting next week. I also suggest
that you review USVP?s website and research their current projects so
you can tailor your pitch appropriately.
My research shows that there are several organizations in the Bay Area
that regularly schedule VC events. I suggest that you review these and
sign up for their newsletters and regularly review their event
calendars for meetings that might interest you.
I trust that the information I?ve found will help you prepare for your meeting.
Wishing you well with your entrepreneurial efforts.

will be time for Q&A, and plenty of time to meet and talk with the

Great Elevator Pitches: Intro
Over the last 18 months I?ve attended numerous VC breakfast clubs,
founders' brown bag lunches, cocktail receptions and keynote speaker
dinners that I think I must have gained 30 pounds. Over the course of
these events I have met hundreds of other entrepreneurs looking to
grow and fund their businesses. However, of this group, I can only
tell you what a handful of these entrepreneurs actually do.
Unfortunately most entrepreneurs just don?t know how to explain what
their business does in any type of succinct or effective manner.
Thus, this series of blog entries is an attempt to explain how I?ve
learned to build a great elevator pitch.

For Entrepreneurs, a good pitch is needed no matter the task at hand.
Want to raise capital? ? You need to pitch your plan. Want to attract
top notch employees? ? You need to pitch your vision. Want to attract
strategic partners? ? You need to pitch the benefits of working with
you. Want to increase sales? ? You need to pitch your solution. The
ability to pitch, i.e., to get your key message across in a
meaningful, compelling, and concise manner, is one of the
Entrepreneur's most necessary skill sets. It is remarkable then, that
it is also one of the skills most often missing.
