Thanks for the info, although I don't quite see how some of the arithmetic works:

1. Can you point out how you arrived at the overall 2.7 million
figure? There is the second reference that states there were 2.7
million diagnostic angiograms, but that would not include
interventional cases, so it is not clear how the total number of caths
can be 2.7 million.
2. Also, based upon your first reference, it looks like there are
about 1.4 million inpatient diagnostic caths. If I multiply .3467
(percentage of in-patient diagnostic caths) times 2,700,000, I get
936,090, which does not match with the 1.4 million figure.
3. Finally, how did you arrive at the exact percentages? I see that
you derived a diagnostic vs. interventional breakdown based upon a
sampling of hospitals, but I'm not clear on how you derived the
in-patient vs. out-patient breakdown.

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate this information. It looks
like you combined national data on in-patient cases with empirical
information from a handfull of institutions to arrive at the answer.
My guess is that the best answer just isn't out there because the data
is not available, is that what you found?
Thanks,
Sean

< I have revised the figures based on further references.

Total caths an estimated 3.7 million.

1. There are an estimated 3.7 million caths done in the US each year.
2. 35.13% of those are out-patient diagnostic caths
3. 37.83% of those are in-patient diagnostic caths
4. 17.94 % of those are out-patient interventional caths
5. 9.08 % of those are in-patient interventional caths

Using the 2.7 million figure for the total number of diagnostic
procedures. There are 1.4 million in patient diagnostic and therefore
1.3 million out patient diagnostic caths.
This gives the following percentages.
In patient diagnostic ? 51.85%
Out patient diagnostic - 48.15%.

1 million PCI procedures.
664,000 in patient PCI procedures.
In patient ? 66.4%
Outpatient ? 33.6%

Between 1979 and 2002, the total number of cardiovascular operations
and procedures performed in the United States increased 470%; during
that same period, the number of cardiac catheterizations increased
389%. In 2002 alone, there were an estimated 1,463,000 inpatient
cardiac catheterizations performed.

Beyond diagnostic catheterizations, it is estimated that more than 1
million percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures are
performed annually in the U.S.

You can stick something in a persons heart, and they can go home the same day?

Really?
