Question ID: 733146
Geoffroy d'Ablis, the Inquisitor who arrested the village of
Montaillou: what ecclesiastical office did he hold prior to or as
Inquisitor? Was he a priest, bishop, abbot, monk? Did he belong to a
monastic order, and if so, which one? All I want to know here is how
he would have been known in the church, by rank or order or other
designator, apart from his title as Inquisitor.

Thank you,

Dear archae0pteryx,

As I found out, Geoffroy d'Ablis was a Dominican monk from the convent
of Chartres. The contemporary Latin documents refer to him as "Fratre
Gaufrido de Ablusiis" and "Fratris Gaufridi de Ablusiis". So, aside
from holding the office of an inquisitor, he was simply "Frère
Geoffroy d'Ablis".

Before being appointed inquisitor, he had written a comment on Bible
Sentences (the manuscript unfortunately vanished before the 18th
century), and he probably was a Master of Theology, according to Jean
Duvernoy (see the first of the sources listed below).

I hope this helps!
Best regards,
Scriptor
