We are invited to a 4 pm wedding of a cousin on a ranch in eastern
Oregon. the town's population is 1080, SMALL. Dinner will follow,
they are very fundamental Christians so I'm sure there iwill be no
alchol which is fine with us. I am a 1x-2x plus size woman and I'm
stumped on what to wear, any suggestions? I like to be smashing but
not so much so they wonder ....is that how they dress in Detroit? I
have a limited budget less that $ 150.

How about something like this?

It is modest and I am pretty sure you can find something similar for less.

These look very good, have plus sizes , and it will be about $120 :

If I were going to a ranch wedding I'd wear a nice shirt with good
pressed jeans and a fancy belt buckle, but since you say these people
are fundamentalists they likely expect the women to wear skirts of
some kind. However, a ranch wedding is different than a church
wedding, and the attire is likely to be much less formal than city
duds, so probably Western dressy would be a good choice, and even if
they're not all dressed that way, would be entirely appropriate (at
least here in central Texas) and not too expensive. You could do a
denim broomstick skirt with a dressy blouse/shirt and boots, or
something a little more dressed up.

If you want to look a little further, just search on [western plus
size] or [western wear plus size dress OR skirt] for more
possibilities. You can accessorize with silver or Indian style jewelry
for a little more glitz too.

Have fun!

If you're from Detriot, I don't think you have to go all western,
unless it is something you can wear back at home. I wouldn't hesitate
to ask the bride. She wants you to feel right and look good, too, and
knows that you aren't familiar with the terrain.

Just one man's opinion.

I agree with myoarin. Ask the bride, and/or her mother.

No alcohol? Even Jesus drank wine!

Regardless of where the wedding is taking place, I greatly doubt denim
would be appropriate. Even ranchers have "Sunday best" clothes and a
weekly bath for attending church services.

I agree that it would be completely appropriate to ask if dress is
going to be formal, dressy, casual/dressy, etc. Once you know the
parameters are, you might check out coldwatercreek.com. I get their
catalogues, and like the interesting and unique look of many of their
items, some with a hint of "western" flair, but not so much that you'd
never wear them again. (I've ordered a couple times, and their
customer service has been good.) You could look "smashing," still be
dressed suitably for the occasion/culture, and have one or two pieces
of clothing you could enjoy wearing back in Detroir. (Most of their
clothes are available in 1X/2X size.) Also, many "fundamentalist
Christians" don't have any problem with women wearing pants/slacks to
weddings.

Dear me, nelson-ga (and others) - baths and jeans are not mutually
exclusive you know. And while I'll concede there may be differences
between Texas and Oregon, and it's possible that in the northwest
"ranch wedding" means something different than here in the southwest,
I can assure you that denim is entirely appropriate here in Texas for
weddings or virtually any other occasion (thank ye gods and little
fishes!). Haven't you ever heard of a Texas Tuxedo? Even President
Bush wore his boots to the Black Tie 'N' Boots inaugural ball (
http://images.usatoday.com/life/_photos/2005/01/19/inside1-bush.jpg ).

I think y'all might need to broaden your horizons a bit. A ranch
wedding just ain't the same critter as an English garden hitchin'.
;-)

Just to aid in your cultural education, here are a few pics of western
style weddings (and no, they're NOT all in Texas either):

To the questioner: yes, seeing the differences in interpretations just
in these few comments, it sure does seem that best procedure here
would be to inquire of your hosts what they have in mind. Good luck!
