I am searching for a public domain image of President Bill Clinton. This is going to be used in a television show, so I need insure I have the right to use the photograph. I do not want to pay extra for the photo, but I do not mind crediting the photographer. So I need the photo, and a link to copyright information of the photograph showing that it is in the public domain, and that it can be used for such a project. Thanks in advance! I am looking for other pictures as well, please check my other questions! -Thomas |

Dear glasscelloagain, Please use this link to download the official White House portrait [1] of Bill Clinton (size 2299 x 3000 pixels, 2.3 MB, color): http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/Assets/1993/DoD/DD-SC-93-04622.JPEG As the official presidential portrait, that image is a work of an employee of the Executive Office of the President of the United States, taken during the course of the person's official duties. As a work of the U.S. Federal Government, the image is automatically in the public domain. The same official portrait is also available in black-and-white [2], in two versions: - Medium resolution JPEG file, 97 kB http://memory.loc.gov/service/pnp/cph/3c00000/3c07000/3c07700/3c07700v.jpg - High resolution uncompressed TIFF file, 12 MB http://memory.loc.gov/master/pnp/cph/3c00000/3c07000/3c07700/3c07700u.tif I hope that this is what you were looking for! Anything on a U.S. government web site not otherwise identified can be assumed to be public domain. A few works may be covered by copyright (e.g. items on "loan" to the govt.), but this will be a very small proportion. |

Hello again. I answered your Marcus Garvey question, and I hope you don't mind a comment here as well. The official portrait of Bill Clinton is certainly in the public domain, as scriptor-ga noted. Because of bureaucratic double-speak, it's actually quite difficult to find explicit statements about the public domain status of a given work. Probably the closest you can come is this statement from the DoDMedia site: http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/What_We_Offer.htm "The images on our web site can be downloaded ...at no cost and/or limit...All media will be made fully and readily available unless their release is precluded by statute..." Like I said, double-speak! But in essence, there's nothing in the law that make a White House publicity photo 'restricted' in any sense of the word, so that the Clinton photo is indeed, available for use however you see fit. Just my two cents... paf |

Excellent, thanks for all the help! I have actually seen this photo used on television and in newspapers before, so I feel confident with all this info that it is safe to use. Thanks again. |
