I am running QuickTime 7.1 on my Windows 2000 system, which has
multiple users. I just noticed that when one user changes some of his
QuickTime preferences, it changes the preferences for the other users
as well. For example, I logged in as user A and opened the QuickTime
Preferences, and under the Browser tab the "Play movies automatically"
checkbox was checked. So I logged out and logged in as user B (a
non-administrative user). I opened the QuickTime Preferences and
unchecked the "Play movies automatically" box. Then I logged out and
logged in as user A again, and the "Play movies automatically" box had
been unchecked for that user too!

I am confused as to how one user can change the preferences for all
users. Since each user has their own HKCU registry key and
C:\Documents and Settings\<user> folder, the setting for that checkbox
cannot be stored in either of those places. The user also does not
have write permission for C:\Program Files\QuickTime, which is where
QuickTime is installed, so the setting cannot be stored in a file in
there. Nor does the user have write permission for the HKLM registry
key.

Does anyone know how a change to one user's preferences is being saved
for all users?

I would also accept an answer to this simpler question: Where is the
setting for the "Play movies automatically" checkbox stored?

I just discovered there is a QuickTime directory under C:\Documents
and Settings\All Users that allows Write access for Everyone. The
preferences are stored in there, so that explains the behavior I'm
seeing. What a poor design decision by Apple.
