.

In our society we have many funny quirks. One of them has to do with
writing a last will & testament. Many people put off making a will
because they think that in some way that it will bring on one's death.

I am curious. Are there any studies, articles etc. about the average
time between the writing of a will and subsequent death?

Thank you

.

It is not uncommon for a will to be revised numerous times. For the
purposes of this question, would each revision count as a "will
writing"?

Hello Pink

For clarification purposes let us look at only the time between the
writing of an initial will and subsequent death.

uzzz-ga,

There is some information available about how many people have wills
at different ages. For instance, here's a graph (a bit dated) from an
AARP survey:

http://www.esnips.com/doc/edffbcfe-ad77-4114-a56e-2609f6536717/Wills-and-Age.jpg

The graph is from 1999. More recent data show that the percentage of
people with wills has increased since the AARP survey.

Other data is available on life expectancies. For instance, an 80
year old has, on average, about nine more years to go. If he/she
makes it to 85, however, they can expect to live an average of another
seven years.

Does this sort of data begin to get at what you're looking for? If
so, what else would you need to make for a complete answer to your
question?

And if not, can you clarify for us what it is you're looking for?

Thanks a lot.

Hello Paf

The studies, newspaper or magazine articles etc. that I would like to
see would describe the amount of time that passes between the time
that a person commits to their very first 'last will & testament' and
the date of their eventual death.

There are a number of web site links, usually by law societies,
covering documents titled along the lines of "Making a Will Won't Kill
You". Possibly this information is within one of those sites.

The hurdle for many people seems to be to commit to doing their 1st
will. Once that first document is written and signed, and the
psychological barrier has been overcome, then modifications or the
additions of codicils tend to happen with greater ease.

If such nonfictional literary compositions are not readily available,
on or about the average time between the writing of a will and
inevitable death, I would like an answer with data from various
western countries that could be developed to create an interesting
sidebar on this subject within a publication on the importance of
writing a will.

Thank you for the graph info from AARP. I appreciate that you have
taken the time to explore a resolution to this question.

I found this, but it doesn't cite any authoritative source:

"Many people die within three years of writing their latest will."

I know of people who have written a Will because they were terminally ill.

A great idea.

@steph

Please don't go for a long time yet!

Whatever would we all do without you?

@kemlo

Whenever you write your Will, please get it properly Spell Checked or
who knows what more misunderstandings might arise.

You know what I mean!
