I'm a big Lee Marvin fan. Seen most of his movies and think he was the best drunk, tough guy and all around butt kicker in the history of film. Anyway, I always liked the tie Marvin wore to the Academy Awards when he won the Oscar for Cat Ballou back in the 60's. I want to wear one like it during my wedding ceremony this summer but I can't find out what the heck they called this type of tie. It's not a bowtie, it's not an ascot or a short tie, it just looks like a black triangle of some sort. See it at http://www.howardhallis.com/news/2006/leemarvin.gif Anyone know what they call the kind of tie he's wearing in the photo in the above link and where I could possibly get my hands on one? | |

There are places on-line where you can get custom-made ties so there should be no probs! (I'll leave it to a real researcher to dig these out.) Will the choir be singing 'Wandrin' Star' when you lurch your way to the alter? Have a Great Wedding! All the Best Bryan |

Bryan, What is an ALTER? |

Kemlo, an 'ALTER has several meanings but, in particular, it is a rope that is used by a hangman to execute persons who have been condemned to death by hanging. I could have used a different NOUN (please check if you are unfamilar with 'nouns') but it is too late to altar it now. Really, this should have been a NEW QUESTION! |

Bryan is just joshing with you - he is alluding to a book by Kingsley Amis called 'The Alteration' |

wrongdimensionboy-ga, I don't think that's a tie. I think it's a black collar or band with the white collar of his shirt folded over it so it looks like a triangle. - Hammer |

I've talked to serveral formal attire professionals about your question. This is apparently not a previously known or named style of tie. All have said that their best guess is that Lee Marvin's "tie" depicted in that photo was custom made. tutuzdad-ga |

I'm going to see a tailor later this afternoon. If she can do it, I'll consider this question answered... at least for me. I'll post what happens some time tonight or tomorrow. If she can't do it, I'll still be open to both suggestions on exactly what type of tie or collar this is, what it's called, and where I can get them (authentic or custom made). They must have had a name for it since my dad wore a similar one at his wedding. No kidding! |

The tailor is going out of town, and cannot make the tie for me. Any suggestions folks? I tried writing to some web based tie makers (Bowtie.com and Tiecrafters.com) and neither has written me back. |
