Question ID: 734755
what happened to 'character styles' in microsoft word? It's been a
long time since I used them, but they seem to have disappeared!

All the styles seem to be paragraph related. Searches of Microsoft
HELP and google searches don't turn up anything.

Thanks,
JMM

I'm not sure where you've been looking, but try this.

With Word open, click on Format, and then Style.

This will open up the Style dialog box. Adjust the "list" box to read
"All Styles".

This will display (duh!) all styles, including the character styles,
which are identified by a small, underlined 'a'.

You can also define new character styles using the (duh ! again) 'New' button.

Does that help?

That's it, EXACTLY. I knew they had to be there. However, I did an
extensive search, in Word Help, at Microsoft.com, and a google search,
and didn't find anything relevant!

Thanks,
JMM

JMM,

Microsoft has long been reviled for its obscure and very unhelpful
attempts at so-called Help systems.

I guess some things never change. Glad you got it worked out, though.

If by 'character styles' you mean the different styles for which the
letters/numbers appear e.g. arial, courier, roman, script, times new
roman etc
These are called "fonts"
On my version of word they are found 2 rows below "File Edit View" above the ruler.
The default on mine is "Times New Roman" which is displayed.
Next to that is the font size (how big the characters are) default on mine is 10.
Hopes this helps.

Have you changed the version of Word you are using since you saw
character styles? In what version are you looking for them?

On my version of Microsoft Works Word Processor (Windows XP Home
Edition) there is no "Style" option under Format, there is however
"Font" which I believe to be the same thing.
Hoping all this is helping.

To all who offerred comments...THANKS...

What you are all suggesting is how to format individually, words,
phrases, or paragraphs. What I was looking for was a STYLE to define
ONCE, all the font parameters, then be able to use later, rather than
having to remember all the font characteristics you had configured.
This provides consistency, and makes repeating that formatting easier
and consistent, just like paragraph styles do! A good example is the
Hyperlink character style, which starts with Normal, then adds
underline, and Blue.

Paragraph styles provide font formatting for the WHOLE paragraph, but
you still need character styles for less than the whole paragraph.

Once I found WHERE THEY ARE, it's exactly what I need.

Thanks again,
JMM
