Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin football coach and athletic director.   Did
he ever advocate lowering admissions standards for athletes, football
players?

Not that I can see, at least not at UW.

The school prides itself on its academic commitment, even for top
athletes, and Alvarez has always (publicly) echoed that sentiment, as
far as I can tell.

He's gone as far as to chastize other schools for lax standards:

"...''It annoys me to see Notre Dame recruit a kid full bore and we've
already made the decision to back off,'' [Alvarez] said. ''Iowa isn't
even flinching. If they recruit a kid who meets nothing more than the
NCAA (academic) standard, they think he's a great student.''


Alvarez was also one of the first coaches in the US to have academic
performance of the athletes built into his contract at UW.
