I am a 28 year old male with a full UK driving license and no criminal
convictions. I am currently travelling through South America with my
girlfriend and we are planning to come to the US for about 1.5 months.
We are landing in L.A. and want to buy a car and drive it to New York
where we will hopefully be able to sell it. What I would like to know
is what I will need to do to make sure that everything is legal. I
imagine I will need to get insurance but do I need to do anything
else? If it works out to be a lot cheaper / easier for me to insure /
tax the car in another state then I could buy in another state. Any
tips on making the process easier for me will be appreciated.

Hope I gave enough info but please feel free to ask for more.

Thanks

James

I don't know if this is still the case, but...

It used to be that when you bought and registered a car in California,
they MAILED you the title. I think they also used to say that it
could take 6 to 8 weeks to get it. This wouldn't fit in with your
mobility or your time frame, if this is still true. You wouldn't be
able to sell the car without the title.
