Exact numbers for Symantec's pcAnywhere software are not broken out by
the company in any of its financial reports. pcAnywhere is part of
Symantec's Enterprise Security and Administration business group,
which reported revenues of $222.5 million for FY 2002, down slightly
from $230.6 million. Products in this group include Ghost, network
virus protection and pcAnywhere.
Symantec's pcAnywhere has long been a market leader in what's termed
"remote control" software. Remote control software differs from
"remote access" software in that it physically takes control of a PC
and allows the remote user to completely control and even re-boot the
host. But remote control software, because of security issues, is a
smaller segment of the business.
At the end of last year, IDC did a study of the overall RC/RA market
titled "Worldwide Remote Control/Remote Access Software Forecast,
2000-2005" (Oct. 31, 2001) -- $4,500

This spring, it was updated and it appears from press reports that
forecasts were lowered somewhat for the remote control category. The
updated (but much shorter report) is "Worldwide Remote Control/Remote
Access Software Forecast, 2002-2006" (March 5, 2002) -- $2,500

A recent report in Networld, titled "Remote Control Software Grows Up"
(Aug. 5, 2002) notes that IDC pegs the 2002 market at $296 million,
with 5.4% growth forecast for next year.
Competitors to pcAnywhere include Timbuktu and CA's Control IT, but
pcAnywhere has dominated the remote control category for so long (more
than 10 years) that we can estimate its sales. Indeed, in an August,
1999 press release "pcAnywhere 9.0 Distinguished as Analysts Choice,"
Symantec claims 76 percent of the retail remote control market
according to PC Data's retail share report -- and 85 percent of the
corporate market.
Unfortunately, applying those numbers accounts for all of the revenues
of Symantec's Enterprise Security and Administration business group.
A more conservative estimate would give pcAnywhere a 40-50% share,
with its nearest competitors taking another 25%-35% share and the
balance being held by smaller RC vendors (Laplink, Netopia, etc.)
This would put pcAnywhere revenues in the range of $118 to $148
million -- a significant portion of the Enterprise group.
