I clearly remember a shocking photo of Presidents Carter, Ford, Reagan, Nixon and Clinton assembling for a photo op while they all agreed that NAFTA should be passed. I've searched high and low on the 'net with no luck. The photo I'm NOT interested is two Presidents present at the signing of NAFTA years later. | |

I wonder if the photo may have been taken on this occasion (note that Reagan isn't mentioned, but George H.W. Bush is): "A party has been planned in Sep 1993 at the White House to promote the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and to make it clear that the commercial treaty will continue to be a priority issue until its passage. Former presidents Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and George Bush will attend to help back the treaty. Rumors have been spread that the administration would push NAFTA aside for other important issues, such as health reform, but the administration intends to push the treaty and its side agreements through." http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1:14390511/Clinton+Planning+Pro-NAFTA+bash+on+White+House+lawn+on+Tuesday%3B+five+former+presidents+have+been+invited~R~+(President+Bill+Clinton,+North+American+Free+Trade+Agreement)+(includes+related+article+on+a+NAFTA+alternative).html?refid=SEO |

I too believe you are mistaken. If memory serves, five living Presidents (including Ronald Reagan) were only photographed on two occasions, and only one of them was prior to NAFTA: On November 2, 1991, George Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon were photographed together at the Reagan Library dedication. PEOPLE http://www.ocregister.com/ocr/2004/12/10/sections/local/slideshow_335262.php DAVID VALDEZ: PRESIDENTS http://www.adobe.com/education/digkids/news/interviews/david/5presidents.html This date marked the first time in American history that five living Presidents were photographed together. The only other time involving Ronald Reagan was April 27, 1994 when five living Presidents attended the funeral of Richard Nixon. In that photo were Bill Clinton, George Bush, Ronald Reagan , Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford. By then NAFTA had already been signed into law and shortly thereafter Reagan was seen in public no more. Pinkfreud-ga got the right event, but no photo. I was wrong about Reagan, but the five (as mentioned in the www.highbeam.com article) are Clinton,Carter,Nixon,Ford and Bush. Still looking for that photo. |
