shoe3,

This is a great question, and I can see how someone not familiar with
medical and drug terminology may wonder, as you did, if Advair had a
penicillin as an ingredient.

No, Advair does not contain Amoxicillin (a form of penicillin used
primarily in the treatment of S.pneumoniae (strep), E,coli, and
P.mirabilis infections). This would be quite dangerous, as many
asthmatic patients who are in need of Advair, are also allergic to
penicillins. Advair works by dilating and relaxing the bronchial
tubes, allowing the patient to breathe better. As with most drugs,
there are some inherent risks of using Advair: upper respiratory
infection, sore throat , bronchitis, and headaches. Advair is
manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, and Amoxicillin is manufactured now
by several pharmaceutical companies. Advair MAY impair slightly the
immune system, so your doctor will want to know if you have a viral or
bacterial infection of any kind.

Advair Diskus, contains fluticasone propionate (Flovent), a
corticosteroid and salmeterol inhalation powder (Serevent) a
long-acting beta-adrenergic agonist.

Diabetes and kidney disease are most usually implicated as the cause
of neuropathy. In neuropathy, patients complain of tingling,
numbness, and pain, often in the hands, wrists, arms, legs and feet,
especially at night. Amoxicillin can cause neuropathy, but the
incidence of Amoxicillin/penicillin induced neuropathy is rare.
Penicillin-caused neuropathy is usually associated only with very high
doses of intraveneous dosage. (Scroll down near the bottom of the

There HAVE been reports of neuropathy associated with Cipro, the drug
that became famous during the post-September 11, 2001 Anthrax crisis.
Cipro is ciprofloxacin however, and not a penicillin. Nor is Cipro an
ingredient in Advair.

I hope this answer has helped explain the difference in Advair and
penicillin. If any part of my answer is unclear, please ask for an
answer clarification before rating.

I read somewhere that Advair contained Wymox? I also need to know if
Advair can cause neuropathy?
Thanks

Wymox is another brand of amoxicillin, so, no, Advair does not contain
Wymox, nor any form of penicillin.

In very rare cases, the fluticasone portion of Advair can cause
neuropathy. However, I do want to advise you that MANY drugs MAY cause
rare neuropathies, especially if you are predisposed to it. As I
mentioned, diabetics and renal patients are already predisposed to
neuropathy.

?Physicians should be alert to eosinophilia, vasculitic rash,
worsening pulmonary symptoms, cardiac complications, and/or neuropathy
presenting in their patients. A causal relationship between
fluticasone propionate and these underlying conditions has not been
established? ? From Physician?s Desk Reference:
