Question ID: 735992
I will soon have the opportunity to put some time, money and
concentrated effort into learning web design. I need to hear from
someone who is experienced in this field, preferably somone who is not
a natural-born techie, who can guide same. I have a background in
writing, art and graphic design, but despised having to work with
printshops and proofs, etc. I hate reading technical manuals, but if
pressed, would appreciate well-written ones. I really need to learn
this on the internet with a high quality interactive right-brain kind
of training program, and I'm willing to pay for it.

I need to find:

a) above-mentioned comprehensive online training program

b) good online resources for web designers both novice and advanced

I need to know:

a) what equipment to buy -- (I'm Mac oriented)

b) recommended software programs

c) any other general recommendations for someone like me with this goal in mind

Hello again Timespacette,

I've collected quite a few online resources for you. Of course,
everyone has their own favorites, and I included some of mine. Through
trial and error and others recommendations, you'll fall into the
software that works best for you!

1)Online Training

IWA
===
IWA Web Design Training Program

http://www.eclasses.org/cgi-bin/ql/search.cgi?template0=listing/list_courses_main.htm&template2=listing/list_courses_main.htm&listing.cat_ID=131&listing.cat_ID_option=1&sort=listing.start_contract,listing.services&listing.ref=Main_eClasses&listing.status=active

The page for the Dreamweaver training states you can use the demo
software for the class, but to not load it till the day of class, as
it expires in 30 days.

commercial and government Web sites, and will design Web pages and Web

2)Novice and Advanced Online Resources

Beginning Steps
===============

Web Hosting
------------
There are a bazillion hosting sites online. Everyone has their
favorite. I?ve had good luck with both Gate and GoDaddy. You can ask
around or read the reviews I have found below. Expect to pay from
$4-$20 per month, depending on the features you select. Most ISPs
offer free web space that you can use for practice, however for a
business of professional site, you will want ?real? sites with real
domain names.

HTML
====

?There are a vast variety of HTML editors, or software that will write
the code for you. However, we strongly recommend learning the basic
tags first. The reason is that there is no perfect HTML editor, and
without some knowledge of HTML, you won't be able to correct the
mistakes that either you or your HTML editor makes. Luckily, with just
a couple of hours of going through our tutorials, you'll be able to
troubleshoot HTML as if you were born to it. Won't your friends and
neighbors be jealous? You bet!?
http://www.webdiner.com/webadv/intro/html.htm

?Then, when you feel inspired and ready to go, browse through our
tutorials at your own pace. You may also want to consider working
together with a friend. That way, you can check each other's web pages
as you learn.
As a final aside, we came to feel that web page building should come
with a warning label:
WARNING! Web page creation can be addictive!

CGI
===
Beginning CGI (For web page forms, display time and date, and much more)
http://my.execpc.com/~keithp/bdlogcgi.htm#starting

?CGI stands for common gateway interface. Essentially, a CGI is just a
program which runs on your server. It can be written in any
programming language, so long as you can run it on your server. Perl
has become a popular choice for CGI programming because it is
available for all platforms, and it has many useful tools that are
ideal for the web.
When I fill in a form on a web page and press 'Submit', 2 things
happen on the server.
1.	Everything I typed or selected is copied to the server.
2.	The server looks for the program specified at the top of the form, and runs it.
The first thing the program will usually do is request the contents
the web page form, and assign it to variables which it can use. Then
the program is able to search a database or send an e-mail or add to a
guestbook, or whatever you would like it to do.?

Javascript
==========
?So... what is the difference between Java and JavaScript anyway?
They are both similar and quite different depending on how you
look at them. First their lineage:
Java is an Object Oriented Programming (OOP) language created by
James Gosling of Sun Microsystems. JavaScript was created by the fine
people at Netscape. JavaScript is a distant cousin of Java. It is also
an OOP language. Many of their programming structures are similar.
However, JavaScript contains a much smaller and simpler set of
commands than does Java. It is easier for the average weekend warrior
to understand.?

Online Tutorials
================
Others may disagree with me, and it may depend on how you learn, but
free online tutorials are a great source of knowledge. I took one
community college class on Dreamweaver, and the rest I learned from
free online tutorials. Using Google (What else?), simply enter
name of program + free tutorials and you?ll get lots of help.
Some are better than others, meaning you?ll have to do some weeding.

3)Equipment (MAC)
=================

Other than your Mac, you these items will make life easier for you!
Depending on who you will be designing for, you may get by without any
of this.

A good resolution scanner ? for scanning photos and art work

External Hard drive storage ? for backing up created websites, in case
of a Mac crash!

Cd or DVD burner ? also for backing up art work and web sites

Some books on HTML, CSS, CGI and Java Script (Though you can pick up
this information online)

Optional:
---------
Digital camera ? To take you own photos. You can purchase stock photos
and art work, but most everything else is copyrighted.

Drawing Tablet ? if you are a graphic artist, you?ll want one of these
to draw your digital art. Not necessary, but you get better fine
control than with a mouse.

Here?s one brand:
http://www.wacom.com/productinfo/9x12.cfm

Very Optional
--------------
Calibrator ? if need to be very precise with color processing, this is
used to correctly set colors.

?Calibrating your monitor is the first step in achieving accurate
color on your Mac, so the colors you see on your screen are as close
as possible to those captured by your scanner or digital camera. A
monitor-calibration system?composed of a hardware colorimeter and its
accompanying software?takes you beyond the accuracy readings of the
built-in Apple ColorSync Utility, which provides strictly eyeball
measurements. While there are some software-only calibration packages,
this review includes only hardware-software combinations.?

4)Software Programs
=====================

Dreamweaver (Mac version) This software is a winner in
my book, for both beginners and advanced levels. Of course this site
touts the product, but here are some of many reasons to use this
product:
Why Buy Dreamweaver 8?

1.	Work with the industry's leading web development tool.
Use a world-class design and code editor in one tool. Manipulate
pixel-perfect designs in design view or dive right into source code,
or do a little of each. Trust that Dreamweaver projects will be
understood and respected by any web professional.
2.	Learn one tool, then let the tool teach.
Dreamweaver supports and guides users as their skills grow and web
technologies evolve, facilitating easy and quick adoption of new
technologies and methodologies. Build static sites or data-driven
applications or increase creative control through richer CSS
functionality, building skills along the way. Countless in-product
learning tools, such as starter pages, reference content, and
tutorials, help get users up and running within a few minutes.
3.	Work with the technologies of choice.
Dreamweaver 8 provides a platform- and technology-independent
development environment that supports PHP, J2EE, and Microsoft .NET;
runs on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh; and integrates with
industry-leading tools such as Flash, Fireworks, and Contribute, as
well as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word and Excel.
4.	Add video easily.
With Dreamweaver 8 and Flash Video, it's a snap to place video content
on the web. Drag and drop Flash Video into Dreamweaver 8 to quickly
incorporate video to websites and applications. Learn more ?

Simplify CSS.
The unified CSS panel provides a powerful and easy way to understand
the cascade of styles applied to content as well as quick access to
making changes without having to navigate a lot of code through trial
and error.
Get started with XML.
Simply point a web page to an XML file or a URL of an XML feed and
Dreamweaver will introspect it to enable dragging and dropping the
appropriate fields onto the page.?

Adobe support of Dreamweaver. Adobe acquired Macromedia about a year ago.

?Dreamweaver MX is a program for professional website design and
production. Dreamweaver enables you to develop groundbreaking sites,
automate production, and enhance team efficiency. With Dreamweaver,
you can accelerate workflow through integration with web applications,
Microsoft Office, and leading e-commerce and application servers.
Dreamweaver MX combines the visual layout tools of Dreamweaver, the
rapid web application development features of Dreamweaver UltraDev,
and the extensive code editing support of HomeSite.?

There are many WYSIWYG (pronounced whiz-y-wig) HTML editor programs
available.. Additionally, you can simply use a simple word processing
program, if you become very familiar with HTML. (I?m not familiar with
Mac word processors, but PCs come with a simple program called
Wordpad).

For graphics, Adobe Photoshop is the leader, and very expensive.

entirely personal, of course.
