I have been lately experiencing disc space problems with my Maxtor One
Touch external 80 GB Hard Drive (see:
http://www.superwarehouse.com/Maxtor_One_Touch_80GB_External_USB_Hard_Drive/A01B080/p/351835).
I am running Win98SE, installed on an internal master drive C
(capacity 18 GB). What happens is this: The Maxtor drive (F) was
running smoothly all the time, until recently
when I got my first "low disc space" warning while the Windows
reported "free space" showed 8,9 GB. I tried to manipulate the
registry setting (strictly in accordance with the registry manual) to turn off
the low disc warning, to no avail. It was
impossible to create or copy any new files to the drive once the
warning was issued, so I had to remove some files. A month later the
threshold was at 10,9 GB free space. It then moved to 13; a week ago
it was all the way at 18,9. Today it's at 19,1 GB.. The funny thing is
that there are no such problems on my internal C drive. There, I only
get the "disk full" warning when the Windows reported free space is 0
MB. I have run a separate Disc Utility software to analyze the free
space on F, and it reported in accordance with Windows, ie. the now 19
GB free space that I somehow can't access. What am I supopse to do,
please? I am using the F drive mainly for p2p and internet downloads.

Have you ever defragmented the external drive? Windows may be
looking for contiguous disk space in which to place new files.
If you've downloaded and deleted files for a long time and
have never defragmented the drive, you may have 19GB free, but
it may be broken into so many segments that Windows finds it
unusable.

Let me know where this takes you...
