Hello bif,

Thanks for your question.

The drivers for the Motorola SM56 modem can be found on the following
Motorola site:

http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/SM56_DRIVERS.html#DFVwin98

Drivers for most Windows operating systems are there and I understand
that if you are using Win XP, the Windows 2000 driver should work
well. These packages should include not only the .inf file, but all
necessary drivers and the most current updates for this modem.

Search strategy: motorola 56 modem .inf file

Happy surfing.

Hi bif,

That's a little different. What is most strange, is that the .inf file
used just for installation information, not at all when the modem is
installed or used.

Here is what I would do at this point.

Take the NEW drivers I suggested from the Motorola sie and have them
in a folder on your hard drive. Be sure there is a .inf file in this
folder. There should be.

Go to Device Manager (ask if you are not familiar with this) and
remove the existing modem, and any others that may be listed and are
not used. Odds are, this will be the only one.

Cold reboot.

If Windows doesn't find the new modem automatically and ask to install
new hardware, then go to new hardware in Control Panel and select to
add a modem. Tell it you "have disk" and point it to the directory you
have created with the new Motorola drivers.

See if this solves your problem, and if not, do let me know what
errors you continue to receive and I'll check a little further. I have
seen this problem before where the modem appears to be installed but
fails diagnostics, but not whwre the error points to the .inf file as
that is only used for the installation process, as I mentioned.

Let me know how this goes with as much detail as you can. My original
answer should have provided you with your requested .inf file, but
this does not really seem to be your problem. Hopefully, the method
above will help.

An alternative would be to just throw it out and get a hardware
DSP-based one. DSP-based analog modems are dirt-cheap these days now
that broadband is gaining acceptance.
