A biography appears in the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica which can be

A swift and exceptional response. Thankyou. However, I must now press
you further for the answers most crucial to my search. And in
confidence I will tell you why. First, Is the Manteuffel family still
prominent or extant in Germany? If so, can you locate them for me? The
reason being, I'm in possession of the good Field Marshal's batan
presented him by the Emperor in 1873 on his promotion to Field
Marshal. And I'm rather curious if they would like it back in the
family. I tipped you, I'm afraid rather modestly, twenty dollars for
your first answer. Nevertheless, see what you can do for me. Sincerely
, Boyce-ga

Dear boyce-ga,

Thank you for your rating and your generous tip.

Your request for information on the family of von Manteuffel is best
dealt with as a new question which needs to be posted afresh. I
cannot help you with it as I believe it will require some knowledge of
German. There are a couple of German researchers on GA so they may be
able to assist. Just make reference back to this question either by a
link or number 737133. Having said that, they may not be able to
provide you with the information as GA does not permit us to provide
personal information (addresses, etc.) in an answer. I will leave it
with you whether you still wish to post the question.

Boyce,
Since you have indicated your interest in persons who may be
descendents, this German telephone website list 300 + Manteuffel, some
with "von", a couple as "Baron", suggesting that they are more close
descendents, or more interested in showing their title.

http://www.telefonauskunft.de/search.php?qid=1&page=1&sid=a9tq9pvaeuqkib9qp580png9i5&sort=&filter=

Baron = Freiherr is a title that many who could use it eschew in these times.

It is a nice thought to return the baton to an interested member of
the family, but if this is an altruistic gesture - just wanting to
recover your cost or a modest price to return the item to someone with
a personal interest - I think that you should be aware that the baton
could have a higher value in the German market for "Militaria". That
is, someone you might offer the baton to, could turn around and sell
it.
Here is a a site that deals in German Militaria and possibly could
give you an idea of the market for the baton. There are, of course,
many other places and websites for militaria.

I hope, however, that one of the Researchers can direct you to a
direct descendent of Edwin von Manteuffel.
