Thank you for accepting my findings as your official answer. I have
reposted the link below.

American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: Hip and Knee Replacements 2003
http://www.aaos.org/wordhtml/research/stats/Hipkneefacts.htm

Here's another quote (from 2001):

"A single hip replacement costs between $20,000 and $50,000, depending
on patient age and length of hospital stay, most of which is paid for
by Medicare and other health insurers."

Smoger Law Firm: Hip Implants
http://www.texasinjurylaw.com/Sulzer_Hip_Implants/manufacturing_defect_revealed.htm

However, if the patient is a dog or cat rather than a human...

"Routine unilateral hip replacement costs $2,700-$3,500. This includes
all routine expenses associated with the examination, diagnostics,
medications, hospitalization, and surgery. A 50% deposit is required
when your pet is admitted to the hospital."

Virginia Maryland Veterinary Teaching Hospital: TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT
http://www.vth.vt.edu/clientsvisitors/sa-factsheets/sa-factsheets.asp?thr.txt

My Google search strategy:

Google Web Search: "hip replacement cost OR costs"

Oh dear, Timely One, I do hope it's not for you.

My guess: $20,000.

Of course, I'm only guessing.

Wow!

The costs are even higher than my guess, which I had thought was
possibly on the high side.
