I would like to purchase a Pocket PC as a small, stand alone programming platform in an isolated area, (no net hook up)I want someone to compile a list of hardware and matching software to my specs, including pictures and vendor links, so my Mom could buy everything and ship it to me.Requirments: One Pocket PC, either a plamtop with a decent push-down keyboard or a handheld model with a good small external wireless keyboard. If external keyboard, it should use AAA rechargeable batteries- no non standard batteries. If hand held, it should be able to switch from portrait to landscape mode easily. Battery life is non issue, as it will be plugged in most of the time. It should have at least 1 GB capacity- a small internal HDD is good too. No wireless networking needed. It's important that this small device can be used for lots of typing, has a decent screen, the latest OS and decent storage capacity. In essence, a very portable workstation. Digital camera helpful, but not critical. It should include Pocket Word and Excel. Software needs: I am a c# programmer, so if there is anything that allows me to write C# code on the Pocket PC itself, that is ideal. I'm used to Visual Studio. If the best is "Pocket C", then that will work, but if there are tools that allow me to access the pocket.net classes via VB or C#, that's perfect. I would also like a decent paint program, so please include a link to a good one. If there is a version of "Civilization 3" or something similar, please include a link to it. Budget is $1,000. For hardware, please include pictures and brief specs. Also if time allows, the top 2-3 platforms so I can make a choice. Richard Temps. |

Not possible... You should not develop PDA apps on a PDA, you use an emulator in WinXP or Win2000. Because the PDA won't have enough memory for dev app and OS at the same time. Most PDA's only comes with thumbnail keyboards. Graphics design in 320x240 max 16bit color? not a good idea. Memory: 128mb internal or less unless you have an SD Card. Sid Meier's Civilization on CD Only for x86 processors (Pent 1-4) PDA's use X-scale or other processors. The closest thing to your requirements is a MicroPC. http://www.oqo.com/character/OQOH_model01.jpg at http://www.oqo.com Or Sony Either the VAIO UX 180 or the UX50 http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start?CategoryName=cpu_VAIONotebookComputers_UX_Series&Dept=computers The next closest thing that fills most of the requirements is a PDA Phone. http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/image/htc/blue-angel/pic10.jpg What you seek in all the above requirements is not a PDA but a fullscale TABLET PC or microPC with XP (not WinCE/PPC 2003) and an external USB CD Rom. Then any with the above features will fit the bill. Fujitsu, Toshiba tablets Hope that helps BTW the microPC are still out of our price range. they are around $1800 |
