I heard a song in 'Steamers Pub' Victoria B.C. Canada a few weeks ago when I was playing there that I hadn't heard for a very long time and I really liked it having remembered how good it was. I'm not sure who it was by or what it was called but it sure was good. It was in 4/4 timing, female vocals in the main chorus part, vocals had been filtered or some effect electronically to give it a electronic sound to the vocals, it sounded quite spare, for a genre I would say 'trip hop' or ambient pop. there were some drums in the background for, from what I can remember, the whole thing. In the main chorus, I'm almost positive the word 'sun' occurs. The syllables go as follows 'and when the sunnnn, says to meeeee' (sun is the only word i'm sure of but those could work) the sunnnn and meeee meaning the notes are prolonged and change/could change during those words. The vocalist sounds like that of the band 'portishead' or 'Morcheeba' but I'm pretty sure its not them. I tried to record the melody of the vocals go (the part I described above with the 'and when the sunnnn, says to meeee') and uploaded it to internet at this link http://members.shaw.ca/almix12/sun%20vocal%20melody.wma Please excuse the bad keyboard and recording skills hehe. Thats not a very accurate representation but you can probably get the idea. the song may not be in that key (in fact probably isn't so its probably that transposed somewhere) and does not sound as happy as that. The vocals sounded even a bit wavy. It was quite a slow song ( well the vocals were anyway) with the drums approximately (could be wrong on this) 75 (seventy five) beats per minute. Im not sure of the other instruments but I'm pretty sure there were some more... possibly synth and guitar... it happened to be a very noisy atmosphere when I heard it but tried to pick out as much as I could. Many many thanks, Alex |

Alex The song is 'Que Sera Que Sera' and it was recorded by Doris Day. Enjoy! |

Alex Is probonopublico's answer satisfactory or should we keep looking? "Que Sera, Sera" is Doris Day's signature tune. The lyrics to the song are at http://www.webfitz.com/lyrics/Lyrics/1956/211956.html Frankly I can't hear that song in your recording and the lyrics don't match your recollection. |

Ring up "Steamers Pub" and ask them what music that had playing that night. If you describe it to someone who works there they may remember it. |

Hi there, unfortunately it was not the Doris Day tune, I think it was recorded much more recently as it was more electronic sounding. Thanks, Alex |

These are the lyrics for PJ Harvey's song: This Mess We're In. http://www.pjharvey.net/ Can you hear them? The helicopters? I'm in New York No need for words now We sit in silence You look me In the eye directly You met me I think it's Wednesday The evening The mess we're in and The city sun sets over me Night and day I dream of Making-love To you now baby Love-making On-screen Impossible dream And I have seen The sunrise Over the river The freeway Reminding Of this mess we're in and The city sun sets over me What were you wanting? I just want to say Don't ever change now baby And thank you I don't think we will meet again And you must leave now Before the sunrise Above skyscrapers The sin and This mess we're in and The city sun sets over me When you said it was sounded like Portishead, PJ harvey came to mind. Just a guess. I have no idea what this song sounds like, but is has the words "sun" and "me" at the end of each verse. |

Thanks but that wasn't the song :(, thank's a lot for trying. That was a male singer, this was definitely a female. Thanks again, Alex |

Sorry, when I looked through PJ Harvey's music I assumed she did all the singing. |

From the melody provided sounds as though it may be a 'trip-hop' cover version of a velvet underground song called 'who loves the sun'. |

Thanks for the input but I can't seem to find any covers of that song, except one by 'Teenage Fanclub' which I doubt it is by. Also I can't really find the melody in that song resembling that of the one I'm looking for, although the 'Sun' in the title sounds promising, do you know who a cover may be by? Any more ideas would be great! Thanks, Alex |
