Hi henffer-ga, The estimated population of Tokyo, Japan is 34.2 million. Next is Mexico City, Mexico at 22.8 million, followed by Seoul, South Korea (22.3 million) and New York, USA at 21.9 million. These estimates are from "Biggest Cities in the World": http://www.biggest-cities.com/ Populations within "city limits" are smaller, and harder to compare, but you may still find this list interesting: http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/bigcities.htm The biggest city by land area is disputed. Australia's Mt Isa, which extends for 40977 square kilometres but is sparsely populated, has been listed in the Guinness Book or Records under this claim, yet according to Wikipedia both Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and Chongqing, China are larger: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Isa,_Queensland Regards, eiffel-ga Google Search Strategy: "biggest cities" ://www.google.com/search?q=%22biggest+cities%22 "largest city" "land area" ://www.google.com/search?q=%22largest+city%22+%22land+area%22 |

New York is the biggest in the US. A researcher will probably tell you that Tokyo is the biggest in the world... but I'm pretty sure Mexico City is #1 if you count unregistered people. Their population was estimated over 30 million about 10 years ago. |

Kalgoorlie, Western Australia should read City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia. Formed in 1989 when the Town of Kalgoorlie and Shire of Boulder amalgamated. |

Chongqing on the Yangste River may be a serious contender. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chongqing IN the manner of such comparisons, each top ranked place will have its own definition of what is included. The municipality of Chongqing is an area the size of Austria. As my local paper said yesterday, this is somewhat of an administrative trick (article previewing a TV program on "Megacities: the world of tomorrow?"). Never heard of Chongqing before? I hadn't either till I saw an aerial photo of it and thought it was the new high-rise area of Shanghai. It's at the western end of where most cruises through the three gorges portion of the Yangste start or finish. |
