Hello.

I assumed from your question that you were primarily interested in
bilingual, or non-English speaking children in American schools.
Primarily those are the types of articles I have included. However, I
have also include some other references on language learning in
different groups of students.

I searched in Social Science Citation in order to find references for
your topic. I used strings such as “language and academic
achievement”, “motivation and language achievement”, “ethnic identity
and motivation”, and “ethnic identity and language achievement”,
“curriculum and ethnic identity”. These are the articles I found that
I thought would be most appropriate to your question.

Calderon M, Hertz-Lazarowitz R, Slavin R. 1998. Effects of bilingual
cooperative integrated reading and composition on students making the
transition from Spanish to English reading. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JOURNAL
99 (2): 153-165 NOV
This article looks at second and third graders language abilities in
bilingual children. I do not think that it specifically addresses
ethnic identity.

Hertz-Lazarowitz RH, Bar-Natan I. 2002. Writing development of Arab
and Jewish students using cooperative learning (CL) and
computer-mediated communication (CMC). COMPUTERS & EDUCATION 39 (1):
19-36 AUG
This article looks at the writing ability of 5th and 6th grade
bilingual students. It addresses the motivation of cooperative
learning on their language skills.

Gwyn-Paquette C, Tochon FV. 2002. The role of reflective
conversations and feedback in helping preservice teachers learn to use
cooperative activities in their second language classrooms. MODERN
LANGUAGE JOURNAL 86 (2): 204-226 SUM
This is an article that addresses some of the motivational techniques
different teachers have used.

Yeung AS, Marsh HW, Suliman R. 2000. Can two tongues live in
harmony: Analysis of the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988
(NELS88) longitudinal data on the maintenance of home language.
AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH JOURNAL 37 (4): 1001-1026 WIN.
This article discribes a large study on the effect of bilingualism on
the language efficacy of students.

Bowler RM, Smith MW, Schwarzer R, Perez-Arce P, Kreutzer RA. 2002.
Neuropsychological and academic characteristics of Mexican-American
children: A longitudinal field study. APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY-AN
INTERNATIONAL REVIEW-PSYCHOLOGIE APPLIQUEE-REVUE INTERNATIONALE 51
(3): 458-478 JUL.
This article is a study of the academic achievements of a group of
Mexican American students in California.

Castro DC, Lubker BB, Bryant DM, Skinner M. 2002. Oral language and
reading abilities of first-grade Peruvian children: Associations with
child and family factors. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BEHAVIORAL
DEVELOPMENT 26 (4): 334-344 JUL.
This is a study in Peru that looks at academic achievement including
language and language skills. I don’t know if it has anything you
want, but I thought I would throw it in.

Portes PR, Zady MF. 2002. Self-esteem in the adaptation of
Spanish-speaking adolescents: The role of immigration, family
conflict, and depression. HISPANIC JOURNAL OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES 24
(3): 296-318 AUG.
This describes a study of Spanish speaking adolescents which looks at
different variables, including school achievement and motivation.

This following two articles primarily look at ethnic identity and self
esteem. They do, however, address motivation and school achievement.

Smith EP, Walker K, Fields L, Brookins CC, Seay RC. 1999. Ethnic
identity and its relationship to self-esteem, perceived efficacy and
prosocial attitudes in early adolescence. JOURNAL OF ADOLESCENCE 22
(6): 867-880 DEC.

Okagaki L, Frensch PA, Dodson NE. 1996. Mexican American children's
perceptions of self and school achievement. HISPANIC JOURNAL OF
BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
18 (4): 469-484 NOV.

This was the best article I could find on developing curriculum that
was sensitive to ethnic identity.
Harthun ML, Drapeau AE, Dustman PA, Marsiglia FF. 2002. Implementing
a prevention curriculum - An effective researcher-teacher partnership.
EDUCATION AND URBAN SOCIETY34 (3): 353-364 MAY.

I was unable to find any actual curriculum. But, these last two
articles are the only ones that I found on the topic as you described
it.

I hope I have found what you needed. This is at least an overview of
the research on the topics you mentioned. Let me know if there is
something more specific you need.

Thank you

Did none of the research papers include the survey they used in their
studies? I apologize. I thought that they did.

There is a test called the Woodcock-Munoz Language Survey, that was
developed by Richard W. Woodcock and Ana F. Muņoz-Sandoval. It
consists of sets of individually administered tests used to proved an
overall measure of language competence. The tests are measures of
cognitive-academic language proficiency in English and Spanish. They
can be used to help teachers understand a subject's language abilities
or to assess a subject's progress or readiness for English-only
instruction.
