By the standards of most of the western world, Australian real estate
is pretty cheap anywhere away from the big cities. There are parts of
Australia where you can buy a thousand acres for the price of a house
in London.

Can you be more specific about your needs. In particular, what size
city or town do you want to live in? And if it's a smaller city or
town, how close do you need to be to a big city?

Australia is heavily urbanised, and most people seek the action and
variety of the big cities. If you are happy to be, say, a three-hour
train ride away from Sydney then there is plenty of cheap real estate
available. But Sydney itself is expensive, so if you want to live in
one of the capital cities then you would need to consider one of the
less expensive ones.

If you can be more specific, so can we.

One of the Austrailian cities contains large tracts of empty dessert land.

It thus qualified as one of the largest cities in the world.

You could get soundly burned in such a situation.

Some country towns give away land (cost of transfer and associated costs only).
Bruce Rock in Western Australia is one that has done this.

The most expensive house in Perth, Western Australia, has gone on the
market for about 16 million dollars. But Bill Gates place cost $135
million, and American dollars at that. The exchange rate about now is
.70centsA=$1USA. Making the difference even greater.
p.s. The large tracts of desert land are 'outside' our cities.

Dear pugwashjw65-ga, you got the exchange rate the wrong way around.
According to Saturday's West Australian 17th June 2006 the rate was:
Yesterday One Australian Dollar was worth 0.7456 US Dollars to buy, 0.7363 to sell.
In regard to the 16 million dollar house, I wish they were having a "home open".
7 Bedrooms
9 Bathrooms
Indoor Swimming Pool
