Hello Blucken,

Below you will find the results of my research for the U.S. UV coatings market.

Market Size

According to Donald Dykes, president of Impact Marketing Consultants
Inc. (IMC), U.S. consumption of UV/EB coatings for all applications in
2003 was estimated at 95 million pounds, valued at $370 million.

"With the economy in recovery, overall growth is forecast at six
percent through 2008 when consumption will reach 120 million pounds,
valued at $470 million."

Growth

According to UV product manager Tim Tanner of Red Spot Paint and Varnish Co,
UV curable coatings will continue to grow.

He said ?We expect the UV coatings market to grow at a rate of 10-15%
per year for the next five years. This will be a combination of growth
with existing business as well as new applications.?

One key advantage of using UV coatings for automotive refinish is fast cure speeds.

?Valued for its superior finish, speed, efficiency and environmental
benefits, the use of UV and EB coatings technology continues to gain
favor in applications as diverse as automotive OEM and refinish, wood
flooring and cabinetry and aerospace. And while market growth slowed a
bit when the economy went south, signs are looking up for rad-cure.
"For several years leading up to the recent recession, UV and EB had
been recording double digit growth rates,"

U.S. wood finishing industry

?Stricter federal regulation of volatile organic compound emissions is
leading to an increase in the use of ultraviolet light-curable
coatings and automated finishing lines similar to the European style
of wood finishing.?

?While not explosive, the overall growth rate in the U.S. for sales of
UV coatings and equipment is more than twice that for the general
coatings industry. UV coating sales are predicted to maintain a
healthy 10 to 15 percent growth rate. Growth is expected to increase
as wood finishers become familiar with the advantages and application
characteristics of non-thermal curing technologies.?

VOC emissions

?Since UV coatings are generally formulated with little or no use of
the aromatics, esters and ketones (solvents required to keep liquid
coatings in solution until the finish has cured in oil- or gas-fired
convection ovens) VOC emissions are typically negligible. Curing is a
free-radical, photo-initiating process, in which the coating is
exposed to UV light. Photoinitiator chemicals in UV coatings quickly
absorb the ultraviolet light and start a rapid chemical reaction which
is often completed in as little as five seconds. Because the liquid
coating is entirely converted into a solid, there are virtually no
emissions.?

Consultant Steven J. Nerlfi of West Caldwell, N.J.-based Kusumgar,
Nerlfi & Growney sets the 2000 U.S. radiation-cured coatings market at
84 million lb, valued at $420 million and growing at 5 to 8% a year.
The largest uses of these coatings are for wood furniture and
prefinished wood floors. Smaller uses include coatings for optical
fibers, vinyl flooring, metal, and glass.
Other consultants have slightly different estimates of the
radiation-cured coatings market. Impact Marketing Consultants, the
Manchester, Vt., firm that puts out the "Rauch Paint Guide," estimates
the size of the U.S. market at 85 million lb, values it at $475
million, and says it is growing 9% annually.
The Rauch Guide also estimates powder coatings consumption. For 2000,
the guide says consumption is 345 million lb, valued at $873 million,
and forecast to grow 7% annually over the next five years.

Advantages of UV-curable coatings include:

?- Coatings can cure fully within seconds of UV exposure, leading to
rapid production.

- UV systems use less floor space than conventional, solvent-borne systems.

- Neither drying ovens nor high exhaust air flows during coating,
reducing utility costs.

- Elimination of VOC and HAP emissions can eliminate regulatory burdens.

- Although UV-cured coatings cost more per gallon, much less paint is
required to achieve the same dry mil thickness.

- UV-curable coatings are durable and resist degradation from
moisture, chemicals and sunlight.

- Frequent cleaning of equipment is not necessary because coatings
will not cure without UV exposure.

- Potential to coat heat sensitive substrates.?

UV Powder Coatings

?Powder coating curable by ultraviolet light represents a new coating
technology combining advantageous aspects of both conventional
(thermoset) powder coating and liquid UV cure coating technology. In
contrast to conventional (thermoset) powder coatings, melting and
curing of UV powder coatings are two separate processes. Upon exposure
to heat, UV curable powder coatings melt and flow into a smooth film
without crosslinking. Following heating and flow-out, the molten film
is crosslinked by exposure to UV light.?

This paper presents an overview of UV powder coatings properties that
enable the finishing of diverse heat sensitive substrates in general
and specifically, MDF (medium density fiberboard).

New Applications for Powder Coating

?Most plastic substrates cannot withstand the temperature extremes
that are required to cure conventional thermoset powder coatings.
Although most metal substrates do not exhibit heat sensitivity, some
metals can discolor when exposed to high heat. Other substrates such
as natural wood and wood composites emit volatiles such as entrapped
air or water. Wood substrates require curing temperatures below 140C
and in many cases below 100C to minimize volatile evolution. The
ability of UV powder coatings to flow-out at low temperatures and cure
by a very fast radiation-initiated crosslinking via radical
polymerization makes this application method ideal for heat sensitive
substrates. Listed below are examples of heat sensitive substrates
that can be coated using this new technology.?
