Hi bariot:

Thank you for the interesting question.

Fortunately, there is a wealth of information available about anchovy
fisheries around the world. Below, I have provided you with links to
the best information I could find online.

Since you ask for a Peruvian focus, I will start with that
information.

RESOURCES AND THE CRASH OF THE PERUVIAN ANCHOVY FISHERY

(full text)

Quote: "The study is well worth reading for anybody with an interest
in magagement of a natural biolgocial [sic] resource like a fishery,
and/or theoretical work on the relation between state capacity and
natural resource management. For the general reader, it is a
fascinating story of the rise and fall of a natural resource that once
amounted to almost fully a quarter of all world fisheries production!"

Author: Daniel Suman, Sarah Meltzoff, and Nelson Ehrhardt, Rosenstiel
School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami

URL: http://www.ogp.noaa.gov/mpe/csi/econhd/fy99/suman99.htm

Quote: "A bilateral closure of the anchovy fishery would have made
sense because the resource is shared between Chile and Peru in the
waters of the Humboldt Current. Article 170 of the Chilean General Law
of Fisheries and Aquaculture (hereafter Fishery Law) acknowledges this
possibility. However, Chile and Peru do not have a positive history of
cooperative management of their shared pelagic resources, and for
years both nations have exempted their border waters from closure on
the belief that the anchovy would be caught in that zone by foreign
nationals. In mid-1997, Peru closed its anchovy fishery in all
Peruvians waters from its northern to southern borders."

This is good. I appreciate what is here. I am still seeking
international management plans. I have one for Thailand, Canada and
California. I now seriously require information about Australian
Anchovy catches. There is plenty for sardines but anchovy is harder
to come by. Can you find information about Australian anchovy
fisheries for both western and eastern Australia.

Hi bariot:

You are right that information on the Australian anchovy fishery is
hard to find!

I was, however, able to come up with the following snippets of
information:

Title: South East Non-trawl Fishery - 2002 Management Arrangements

Author: Australian Fisheries Management Arrangements

URL: http://www.afma.gov.au/fisheries/south%20east%20nontrawl/plans/management%20booklet-2002.php#21

Description: As far as I can interpret, this mention states that
non-trawl fishing boats are not allowed to catch *any* achovies in
their nets.

Title: Review of the Western Australian Pilchard Fishery

Author: Australian Department of Fisheries

URL: http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/comm/broc/mp/mp129/fmp12911.html

Description: Lists many interesting papers on the Western anchovy
fishery.

Title: A collaborative investigation on the usage and stock assessment
of bait fishes in southern and eastern Australian waters, with special
reference to pilchards (Sardinops sagax); extension into Queensland
and New South Wales

Author: Jonathan Staunton-Smith, Southern Fisheries Centre

URL: http://www.frdc.com.au/pub/reports/files/95-043_98-130.htm

Description: This report (which you have to order), seems to contain
some valuable information on the (south)eastern anchovy fishery.

Title: ANCHOVY (ANC)

Author: New Zealand Fisheries

URL: http://www.fish.govt.nz/sustainability/research/assessment/plenaryreport/ANC_02.pdf

Description: Some information on NZ, in case you're interested.

This is all I was able to find. I hope it is of help.
