I am looking for how many Americans purchased property (both
directly and created a trust/fideicomiso) in Mexico in 2005 and 2004
and what how much did they collectively pay each year?

The last part could also be phrased, what was the total American
consumer investement in residential real estate in 2004 or 2005?

I?m aware of some estimates that state there are 100,000 retirees
moving to Mexico per month. I?m also aware of a few articles that
state that 2,500 Americans are purchasing property in Baja per month.
Unfortunately neither of these paints a clear picture of the total
property ownership and value of the properties. I think that the best
figures are available in the Mexican Institute of National Migration
(http://www.inami.gob.mx/pagina_ingles/principal-ingles.asp) but this
is as far as I?ve been able to get.

I need to be able to cite any answers and the sources must be more
than a reference to "Mitch Creekmore states 1.5 million American's
have purchased second homes in Mexico"
