Question ID: 740428
I'm seeking the complete lyrics to the "Little Audrey" cartoon theme song.
If it helps any, "Little Audrey" was broadcast under the broader heading
of "Noveltoons." This was circa late-1960's to mid-1970's (oh my GOD,
I haven't seen a "Noveltoon" in over THIRTY YEARS!).

Doing a quick search on the first line, Google shows quite a few matches,
but none of them yield the actual lyrics, other than (in one case) the
first two lines (which by the way are, "Little Audrey says / Save it for
a rainy day...").

Help...???

Grandrascal,

I can provide you with a free downloadable recording of the Little
Audrey theme song.

Would this be a satisfactory answer to your question?

Thank you.

Bobbie7

I also have the audio; I cannot make out the words! That is why I am
seeking the lyrics.

So the short answer to your question is, "No, the audio file will not
suffice, but thank you very much anyway." :/

How's this?

Oh, Little Audrey says
Save for a rainy day.
She saves, but every time it rains,
She spends what she puts away.
She knows her proverbs, A and B, and knows the good they bring
But when she has to follow them, well, that's another thing!
Oh, Little Audrey says
While the sun is out, make hay.
Though she's not immense, there's a lot of sense
In what Little Audrey has to say.

Oooooo! That looks VERY close! Three "doubtfuls", though:

 > While the sun is out, make hay.

My memory says it's, "While the sun shines bright, make hay"; I
could be wrong. I'll have to listen to it again.

 > Though she's not immense, there's a lot of sense

Hmmm, that's DOESN'T make "a lot of sense"; there's probably a word
or two wrong in that line.

 > She knows her proverbs, A and B, and knows the good they bring

I never COULD work out that line... but even so, seeing it written
here and thinking about it, I rather have my doubts. Could it not
be "She knows her proverbs A TO Z..."? That would make more sense.

But that surely comes VERY close! Anyone else have anything to
add...???

I hope someone can come up with something authoritative for you.

.> I hope someone can come up with something authoritative for you.

I hope so, too. Listening again, I find that where I thought
the line was "While the sun shines bright, make hay", it
is really "While the sun is hot, make hay." Strange.

It really does sound like you are right about the line
"Though she's not immense"; but I'm hoping I'm wrong! That
would be a very idiotic line (and a non sequitur besides)
for such an otherwise straightforward jingle.

The sound on my audio file isn't all that clear; it's
kinda hollow-sounding. I wonder if yours is any better?

On a different subject entirely -- because this has
gotten me thinking about Noveltoons -- not a question,
just a rumination -- I've remembered yet another series
of classic cartoons from about the same period, called
"Harveytoons." While Noveltoons included Herman & Katnip
and Casper The Friendly Ghost and (of course) Little
Audrey, the main memory I have of Harveytoons is a
cartoon called "Baby Huey" (anyone remember that big
lummox?!) :) My mind's ear can play every note to
both the "Noveltoon" and "Harveytoon" themes. Ah, those
were the days!

I'm no longer researching this, since I've tapped all the sources I
can think of. I hope someone will be able to find more for you.

Thanks, pinkfreud-ga, for your efforts! It's appreciated.

To bobbie7-ga: I'd like to see if your recording is any
clearer than mine. Where do I obtain it?

Oh, I concede that you're probably correct; I'm just not happy with
the line, that's all. It strikes me as rather stupid.

In fact, if you will re-post your lyrics as an Answer, I'll concede
the Question and award you the $10.00.

There's not much time left on the question, so I'd advise you to hurry!

Grandrascal,

I appreciate the offer, but I'd rather not post an answer that does
not fully satisfy the customer. This was an interesting project, and
the entertainment value was reward enough!

Best regards,
pinkfreud

In case anyone else wants to try transcribing the song, there's a
Little Audrey cartoon with a fairly clear version of the theme song
here (in RealPlayer format):

Here's a different Little Audrey cartoon:

I think Pinkfreud's transcription is correct, except that the proverbs
part should be "A to Z."

The "not immense" line is not a non sequitur. It reflects assumptions
that smaller people are younger than larger people, and younger people
are stupider or more ignorant than older people.

Even if that's what they meant, it's certainly not what they SAID!

Saying that she is "immense" doesn't merely imply she is "bigger"; it
implies that she is OBESE! Somehow, I don't think that was there intent!

Besides -- a whale is smarter than an elephant is smarter than a person...?
What sort of "logic" (so-called) is that?!

Had they said that she is not as old, or as mature, or even that she was
"littler", I'd agree with your reasoning. As it stands, though, I still
think that this line is a non sequitur. :(

Uhg! Spelling error -- strike "there" and insert "their" in the
tenth line of that last comment! Ick!!! I hate when I do that!!!

OK, if you take it literally, it is reflecting an assumption that only
people who are immense make sense when they talk, which is a rather
unlikely assumption, but I read "though she's not immense"
figuratively as a cute (and rhyming) way to say "though she's just a
little girl," which I believe was the writers' intention. Lots of
figurative language doesn't make sense if you take it literally.

Maybe this would have been a better way to put it...

"Though she's not a Mensan, there's a lot of sense in what little
Audrey has to say."

If credentials matter, I spent five years working as a transcriber of
television news segments. I really do think the line says "Though
she's not immense..."

The word "immense" was apparently chosen, not because it was the most
descriptive word, but because it rhymes with "sense." Rhymed verse
often results in awkwardness when the meaning is less important than
the sound of the words. The authors of jingles for cartoons aren't
generally mistaken for Shakespeare. ;-)

I'm still hoping that an answer from some reference source may be
available. I suggest that you leave the question open a bit longer, in
case someone can find such a source.

You're certainly right that the lyrics aren't very strong in the
sense-making department. Another rather odd thing about the song is
the opening bit:

Oh, Little Audrey says
Save for a rainy day.
She saves, but every time it rains,
She spends what she puts away.

If you stop to think about it, this basically says that she uses her
rainy-day savings for their intended purpose: she uses them when it is
raining. The implication, though, is that Little Audrey is not living
up to the intent of the proverb. If that were the case, she'd be
spending the rainy-day savings on sunny days!

I guess, in the end, this just goes to show that it's not a good idea
to obtain one's life philosophy from cartoons. :-D

I noticed that, too. I gather that what they are trying to say is that
she is taking the proverb too literally!
