This will vary widely across Europe. Countries with cheap hydroelectricity are more likely to use electric central heating, which is not usually hot water radiator. For the UK, "The bulk of gas is burned in domestic home heating, over 70% of which is gas fired."[1]. The vast majority of these systems would be hot water radiator, as individual gas wall heaters and gas-fired warm air systems are not very common in UK homes. [1] http://www.energybulletin.net/8422.html Searching the Office of National Statistics website gives several datasets relating to central heating; as I don't have Excel I can't download the datasets to see if they differentiate between types of heating system. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/CCI/SearchRes.asp?term=central+heating&x=0&y=0 Owain |

The Office of National Statistics website spreadsheets do not differentiate between types of heating systems. The only provide the total number of residences with heating by housing type, # of occupants etc... Perhaps it would be better to find the total number of existing installations of residential boilers in each of the EU countries - this might be the best indication of the # of homes heated with hot water. It would however have to exclude industrial/commercial applications in high rises and all steam systems. |
